UEFA Champions League wrap: 12 goals in Dortmund, Juve rallies

One Premier League team’s UEFA Champions League hopes are soaring, while another will have to wait to find out if it will even make the Europa League.

Leicester City stayed unbeaten through five group stage games to pick up a seeded spot in the UCL’s knockout rounds, while Tottenham Hotspur crashed out of the UCL with an atypically poor defensive showing in Monaco.

USMNT teen Christian Pulisic wasn’t formally credited with an assist, which is tricky to do as an attacking player when your team scores nine. Borussia Dortmund hammered Legia Warsaw 8-4 to maintain control in the race to snare a seeded berth.

BVB is two points clear of Real Madrid, which overcame a late penalty which could’ve cost them against 10-man Sporting CP. Raphael Varane scored early and Karim Benzema finished a late chance in the 2-1 win.

Sevilla‘s early lead through Nicolas Pareja turned out to be smoke and mirrors, as Juventus rebounded to draw level by halftime. The Old Lady scored the only two goals of the second half, with Leonardo Bonucci putting Juve ahead in the 84th minute and Mario Mandzukic making it 3-1 in stoppage time. Juve now holds the edge in the group and cannot finish lower than second.

Lyon can still catch Sevilla, thanks to star striker Alexandre Lacazette’s 72nd minute goal at Dinamo Zagreb.
