Chile got off to a shaky start in front of their home crowd, and the United States took advantage when Brandon Vasquez put the Yanks ahead in the 10th minute. A miscommunication between Chilean defenders allowed Luca de la Torre to steal the ball, which found its way to Vasquez who poked it home through the keepers legs.

However, the lead lasted just ten minutes as Chile capitalized on a mistake by the U.S. defense. The Americans failed to clear the the box in a bit of a scramble, and the ball popped out to Marcelo Allende. The Chilean captain fired a shot on goal that deflected off Danny Barbir and into the side netting, knotting the score at one.

In the second half, the U.S. fell into a hole just minutes after the restart, as Gabriel Mazuela put Chile ahead 2-1. Mazuela took a wonderful through ball in on goal, and collided with American goalkeeper Will Pulisic as he slid out to try and collect. The ball popped loose and Mazuela tapped it in to put Chile ahead, but Pulisic was irate. Replays showed Mazuela’s hand may have jarred the ball loose when he slid through, but there was no call as the goal stood.

While the United States tried to push for an equalizer, Chile sealed the match with a goal from Gonzalo Jara in the 86th minute. Jara cut to his left foot from the top of the box and bent a beautiful shot into the top corner, leaving Pulisic no chance at making a save.

Camilo Moya would add a fourth for Chile in the 93rd minute as the poor year for U.S. soccer continues.
