With the Women’s World Cup less than 20 days away, the United States women’s national team defeated Mexico 5-1 in the team’s penultimate send-off match.

Their final match before the World Cup is on May 30th against Korea Republic at Red Bull Arena in New Jersey.

Kobe Bryant was in attendance at the StubHub Center in Los Angeles as the USWNT improved their stellar record against Mexico, bagging five goals in an absolute drubbing.

The United States came out of the gates firing, and could have scored three or four goals early if not for the stellar play of Cecilia Santiago in goal for Mexico.

An early flurry of attack saw the U.S. hit the crossbar, have a shot cleared off of the goal line and have Santiago make multiple big saves to keep the match scoreless.

Sydney Leroux finally broke through for the United States in the 28th minute, showing composure as she took a through ball from Megan Rapinoe, dribbled around Santiago in net, and finished from a tight angle.

While it looked like the United States would keep piling on the goals, it was Mexico that found an equalizer before the break. Bianca Sierra hit a free kick into the U.S. box, and Hope Solo got caught out of position. As Solo came off her line to try and punch clear, Ariana Calderon connected on a header to level the score at one.

The USWNT wasted no time getting back to it in the second half, scoring just 32 seconds in. Lori Chalupny scored on her first touch of the match, cleaning up the scraps after a little scramble in the Mexico box.

Less than 15 minutes later Abby Wambach would score her 181st international goal, converting from the penalty spot after Mexico was called for a hand-ball in the box.

Leroux would make it 4-0 with a near replicate of her first goal, taking a ball in behind Mexico’s defense before dribbling around Santiago and finding the open net.

Wambach added her second with a signature header, getting on the end of a Tobin Heath cross. Heath used a slick elastico move to cross-over her defender before hitting a perfectly weighted ball to Wambach.
