Manchester United scrubbed the pitch with Queens Park Rangers today, dismantling them for a 4-0 win, United’s first of the season and first under manager Louis van Gaal.
Following the win, which sent supporters into a frenzy, the Dutch manager urged his team to put the early-season struggles behind them and use the display today to act as a new season opener.
He was “very happy” with the win - to the surprise of nobody - and said his team was “more direct” through to the goal in the attack. Meanwhile, he said United can still win the title despite their start, agreeing with the reporter’s suggestion that his time at Bayern Munich also resulted in a title despite not picking up their first win until the 4th match of the year.
The gaffer changed the formation for the first time this year, scrapping his 3-at-the-back setup (which is actually more of a 5-at-the-back) due to injuries, and it resulted in exactly that direct attack he alluded to. Manchester United outpassed QPR 750-275 and Daley Blind - on his United debut - completed 107/112 passes at the bottom of the midfield diamond as they distributed brilliantly.
