Don’t blink, because you’ll miss it.
On Sunday at BBVA Stadium, New York Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill latched onto a long chipped pass forward from Dax McCarty straight from the kick off. The Australian international flicked a header past Jermaine Taylor, then rifled a sublime volley into the top corner after just EIGHT-SECONDS.
The goal was the fastest in MLS history, beating Dwayne De Rosario’s previous 2003 by three seconds.
It was a magnificent strike from a player who has elevated himself as New York’s undisputed main man, and with the Red Bulls on the verge of clinching their first-ever Supporters’ Shield after the 3-0 win at Houston, Cahill deserves plenty of the credit for galvanizing RBNY into a team, rather than a bunch of talented individuals that they’ve been for many seasons.
Cahill, 33, has been doing plenty of work off the ball and links midfield with offense seamlessly. Of course, it always helps when you can score with less than 10 seconds on the clock, too.
As they say in Oz, “What a ripper... you little beauty, Timmy.”
