Luis Perez was also let go, allowing Josh Johnson to move into the No. 2 role for now. Savage is just a camp arm with more career interceptions (7) than touchdown passes (5).

Savage has failed to get on the regular season field for anyone other than former protector Bill O’Brien. Even in Matt Patricia’s back-to-the-future system, Savage figures to be little more than a camp arm.

This is a potentially bad sign for Andy Dalton’s (thumb) chances of starting against the Broncos in Week 13. If Dalton can’t go, athletic but erratic Jeff Driskel would get the start. Driskel is basically a poor man’s Josh Allen.

Considering the reckless nature of Beathard’s game, Savage could certainly see snaps. Second-year UDFA Nick Mullens is the other quarterback on the roster.

It means C.J. Beathard (wrist) will be good to go against the Raiders on Thursday evening.

Savage has been cut twice in the last two weeks. The 49ers had an open roster spot after placing Raheem Mostert and CB Emmanuel Moseley on IR. Savage will continue to serve as the No. 3 quarterback

Savage lasted four days with the 49ers. It’s possible he’ll be re-signed after this week. With Jimmie Ward (hamstring) doubtful, the 49ers promoted DB Tyvis Powell to the active roster.

The 49ers were already working out Savage, so this isn’t too surprising. Garafolo and NFL Media’s Jim Trotter believe a veteran quarterback won’t be signed this week, however, because the 49ers need the roster spots to fill other positions. Whoever ends up signing will be C.J. Beathard’s backup to start. Savage has more career interceptions than touchdowns and has a 5.7 adjusted YPA. There’s no way that Savage is the best free agent quarterback available.

The Niners are grasping at straws after losing Jimmy Garoppolo (ACL). One of the least-mobile quarterbacks in modern NFL history, Savage failed to make the Saints’ 53-man roster in training camp. C.J. Beathard will be the 49ers’ starter for the foreseeable future, unless of course he plays his way out of it.
