He didn’t practice on Friday. Coons said he expects to play on Sunday. Backup quarterback Austin Davis is the team’s emergency kicker, though it likely won’t come to that.

Coons did not practice Friday and was listed as questionable, but he was always expected to play. If he does suffer a setback, Austin Davis is the emergency kicker. Cleveland declared WR Andrew Hawkins, RB Glenn Winston, RB Daryl Richardson, CB Justin Gilbert, DB K’Waun Williams, OL Kaleb Johnson and WR Rannell Hall inactive for Week 16 against Seattle.

The Browns didn’t add another kicker, so Coons will play despite only getting in one limited practice this week. Austin Davis will be the emergency kicker if Coons has a setback.

An undrafted rookie out of Washington, Coons was cut loose to make room for veteran Ryan Succop. With the state of the kicker position unsettled across the NFL, Coons could get another shot this season.

He gives the Chargers some insurance in case Nick Novak (back) can’t go Sunday against Cleveland. Coons last played for the Browns in 2015, converting 28-fo-32 field goal attempts with a long of 47 yards.
