Díaz

The Mets removed Díaz from their 40-man roster back in April and now have cut him loose entirely after he posted a 6.75 ERA this year at Triple-A Syracuse. He was acquired from the Blue Jays last January in the Steven Matz trade.

Díaz went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment last week and will remain with the Mets as organizational relief depth. The 25-year-old righty posted a serviceable 5.40 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 21/12 K/BB ratio across 25 innings (20 appearances) last year at the major-league level.

Diaz, 25, is removed from the 40-man roster to make room for newly-acquired Adonis Medina. If he’s not claimed, he could end up back in Triple-A with the Metropolitans.

Diaz was acquired from the Blue Jays in the Steven Matz trade last offseason and made 20 appearances with the big club in 2021. Alvarez, 20, is one of the best prospects in baseball but is in need of more seasoning.

Diaz was charged with four earned runs over just 1 1/3 innings of relief on Monday night against the Cardinals as his season ERA jumped from 4.18 to 5.40. Jake Reed (forearm) has come off the IL to fill the bullpen vacancy for New York.

Diaz has a 4.15 ERA in 21 2/3 innings with the Mets. The 24-year-old takes the place of Khalil Lee, with Lee heading to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

The two clubs are playing a seven-inning game on Tuesday evening at Citi Field after completing a suspended tilt in the afternoon. Diaz could stick around beyond the nightcap with MLB rosters expanding to 28 players on Wednesday.

This move clears out a 26-man roster spot for Heath Hembree, who was claimed off waivers from the Reds last week and will be active Tuesday night against the Giants. Diaz, 24, holds a 4.15 ERA in 21 2/3 major league innings this season.

Diaz is taking the place of the injured Jake Reed (forearm) in the Mets bullpen. The right-hander has already appeared in 17 games out of the Mets bullpen this season, registering a 4.15 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 20/10 K/BB ratio over 21 2/3 innings.
