Redskins coach Jay Gruden says he’s “really, really excited” about second-year DE Anthony Lanier.
An UDFA out of small-school Alabama A&M, Lanier was active only four games as a rookie, but lasted the entire year on the 53-man roster. The Redskins wouldn’t have kept him around if they didn’t have high hopes. Lanier is a rangy 6-foot-6, 290 pounds. There are snaps for the taking after Washington let Chris Baker and Stephen Paea walk in free agency.

Redskins DE Anthony Lanier has gained 20 pounds since February.
A 6-foot-6 second-year UDFA out of Alabama A&M, the Redskins wanted Lanier to bulk up. He was in the 285-290 range as a rookie. Lanier played just 48 snaps last season, generating a pair of quarterback hurries, but the Redskins have been hinting at a bigger role. Coach Jay Gruden said he was “really, really excited” about Lanier in March.
