PFT’s Mike Florio reports Redskins president Bruce Allen “hopes to return” to the Raiders.
Bleacher Report’s Mike Freeman confirms the report, adding that the feeling is mutual. Per Florio, Allen would return to the Raiders in an executive-type role with no personnel decision-making, but a “significant role in managing the business.” Allen is currently believed to be running the show with the Redskins alongside senior VP of player personnel Doug Williams. Allen leaving the Redskins could be viewed as a win for Washington. Allen and coach Jon Gruden have a relationship dating back to their previous Raiders days and again with the Bucs.
  • NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport named Redskins GM Bruce Allen as a potential candidate for the Raiders’ GM vacancy.
RapSheet noted that Jon Gruden has “final say” in the Raiders’ organization, and he has longtime ties to Allen from their days together in both Oakland and Tampa Bay. Allen has had an hilariously unsuccessful tenure in Washington for nearly a decade, but cronyism reigns supreme throughout the NFL. RapSheet also mentioned Lions exec Jimmy Raye and ex-Bucs GM Mark Dominik as GM candidates for the Raiders, who are scheduled to move to Las Vegas in 2020.
  • Redskins fired president Bruce Allen.
Allen had a 10-year run atop the Redskins’ organization, “graduating” from EVP to GM to president, but it was evident Allen was the one calling the shots in D.C. He has a history with the Grudens, and once Jay Gruden was canned earlier in the season, the writing was on the wall for Allen. The Skins went to the playoffs twice under Allen, losing both times in the Wild Card round. Early reports out of the area are that Ron Rivera is expected to get the Redskins’ coaching job. Owner Dan Snyder will probably still get involved in this situation, but Rivera is expected to be able to hire his own GM should he get the job.
  • Redskins president Bruce Allen will reportedly “be out of running the team’s football operations by Monday.”
In addition to hiring a new head coach, the Redskins are expected to completely shake up their front office, per NBC Sports’ JP Finlay. Allen is expected to at least lose his football operation role and could be removed entirely from the organization. It’s a move that is long overdue but one that Redskins owner Dan Snyder has found tough to pull given his close relationship with Allen. The Redskins need to remove Allen from football operations to give potential head coaches more confidence in the organization’s future. A statement from the team should come within the next 72 hours. A new head coach could be named within that time frame as well.
  • USA Today’s Mike Jones reports Redskins president Bruce Allen “still has a good chance to keep his job.”
Allen has been on the hot seat after the Redskins fired Jay Gruden. Owner Dan Snyder is considering a complete overhaul this offseason, but there are scenarios where Allen returns in a lesser role. Keeping the current power structure in place would come with some pushbacks, as Allen’s presence makes “many of the top coaching candidates hesitant to come to Washington.” Allen has overseen just three winning seasons since joining the Redskins in 2010. His Snyder ties are the only thing saving his job.
  • NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports Redskins owner Dan Snyder is “truly evaluating” president Bruce Allen’s status with the team.
Allen has been with the Redskins since 2010 in President/GM roles. His tenure in Washington has been largely unsuccessful, with just three winning seasons and multiple front office controversies. Allen was the driving force behind hiring Jay Gruden and botched the Kirk Cousins negotiations. He’s also racked up massive cap penalties during his time in Washington. The Redskins (2-9) have fielded one of the worst rosters in the league this year, with an offense featuring a 34-year-old running back and a rookie quarterback that’s looked overmatched. Moving on from Allen is a long overdue move for the NFL’s most dysfunctional franchise.
  • ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Field Yates report that NFL Network’s Mike Mayock has “emerged as a candidate” for the Redskins’ GM job.
Mayock, 58, has worked at NFL Network since 2005 and been involved as a broadcaster for Notre Dame games and Thursday Night Football. Known as a draft guru, Mayock’s star has dimmed a bit recently, as he likely simply doesn’t have the time to devote to full-blown draft study with all of his other commitments. But a famous tape grinder, Mayock interviewed for a Raiders front-office job when now-deceased owner Al Davis was running the show. If John Lynch can be hired right out of the FOX booth with zero personnel experience, we wouldn’t put it past Mayock landing a similar gig.
  • Redskins president Bruce Allen says “there’s been no decisions made” on if the team will hire a general manager.
“The process, we’re going to take our time. We’re going to see what we need to add to our personnel department. There’s some good quality people available we’re talking to.” Allen was responding to a report he doesn’t plan on hiring a general manager. The Redskins fired Scot McCloughan in March, but there hasn’t been much effort to bring in his replacement. Even if Washington adds someone, Allen and Jay Gruden should continue to hold the power structure.
  • ESPN’s John Keim believes there is a “decent chance” the Redskins do not hire a new general manager.
Washington fired former GM Scot McCloughan in March, but the search for a new general manager was put on hold during the pre-draft process. With the draft now in the rear-view, Keim expects the team to begin interviewing candidates soon, but they might not end up hiring any. As Keim notes, president Bruce Allen will continue to hold the power even if they bring in a new general manager, coach Jay Gruden has an important voice in personnel decisions, and the Redskins reportedly liked how the free agency and pre-draft process ran after McCloughan was fired. Perhaps someone like Doug Williams is given the GM title, but this is clearly going to be Allen’s and Gruden’s show moving forward.
  • Redskins president Bruce Allen said they are “getting close to having a final plan” on the structure of the front office.
Allen danced around a question about someone getting the general manager title, but he did say the organization will add “at least one, two, maybe three people” to the front office. It will be a surprise if Washington adds a true general manager, but it sounds like we will know for sure in the next couple weeks.
