Packers signed Illinois State S Christian Uphoff.
Uphoff (6'2/209) is a skyscraper of a safety prospect. Uphoff started for just one year at the FCS level, though, and only previously saw the field as a kick returner. When Uphoff took a starting job in 2019, he showed the right size and demeanor to cover tight ends, as well as proper eyes and trigger when working with pass concepts in front of his face. Uphoff plays upright through his pedal and when transitioning back down to break on the ball, often leaving him a tick late. At the FCS level, that was often not as punishing, but NFL teams will be able to take advantage of his middling agility, as evidenced by his 7.09-second three-cone time. Uphoff could contribute on special teams if he makes the 53-man roster and might develop the flexibility to be a strong safety or nickel/dime linebacker after a couple years of seasoning.
