As Alabama prepares for its season opening game against Virginia Tech, the Tide will be dealing with a couple of short-term losses.
Nick Saban said Tuesday that linebacker Trey DePriest (pictured) has been suspended “for a short time” for a violation of team rules. DePriest, who was not at practice on Tuesday, will be able to return if he fulfills certain obligations which were not specified. DePriest was the team’s second-leading tackler in 2012.
“He will be eligible to return to the team if he does what he’s supposed to in relatively short order,” Saban said. “If he does those things, he’ll be back with us in as soon as a week.”
Additionally, Tide wide receiver Amari Cooper will be held out of the next couple of practices with a strained foot. He is currently listed as day-to-day. Cooper led all receivers for Alabama last year with 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns.
While DePriest’s status is more up in the air, both should be fine to return for Week 1 against the Hokies.
