For the first time in his 12 years at the program, University of South Florida head coach Jim Leavitt has fired an assistant coach.Shortly after meeting with recruits Saturday night, Leavitt informed offensive coordinator Greg Gregory that his services would no longer be needed. The move was said to have come as a shock to Gregory.Gregory had been at the school since 2005, and was promoted to coordinator two seasons ago."Greg is an outstanding coach and I appreciate everything he has done for us. It is time for our program to move in another direction,” Leavitt said in a statement according to the St. Petersburg Times.Wide receivers coach Mike Canales is the favorite to replace Gregory, the Tampa Tribune reported. Canales was the school’s coordinator from 1996 through 2000.
