Just over three months after he resigned/was fired/retired as Ohio State’s head coach, Jim Tressel has found himself back in the game of football.
According to Phil Wilson of the Indianapolis Star, Tressel has been hired by the Indianapolis Colts as what’s being called a “game-day consultant”. Indy head coach Jim Caldwell confirmed the report this afternoon.
Caldwell said Tressel’s duties are expected to revolve around being a replay consultant, which, the Associated Press writes, “will allow the other coaches to focus on their individual jobs without having to worry about making decisions on replay reviews.”
Interestingly, Tressel, a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Browns, visited the training camp of his boyhood NFL team earlier this month. When asked after the practice session if he would become a consultant for the Browns, Tressel said, “oh no, not right now.”
Tressel has stated on multiple occasions since his departure from the Buckeyes that he would like to get back into coaching -- probably -- at some point in time, although it’s obvious he will be off the sidelines in 2011. The job with the Colts, however, will allow him to stay attached to the game in a very low-profile position.
As an aside, Terrelle Pryor was suspended for the first five games of the 2011 season by the NCAA, a penalty the NFL decreed would carryover into the first five games of the former OSU quarterback’s professional career. Tressel was also set to be suspended for the first five games of Ohio State’s season; ya think Tressel’s NCAA suspension will carryover into the NFL as well?
