Justin Fuente competed his first coaching staff at Virginia Tech Monday with the hiring of former Memphis defensive coordinator Galen Scott as the Hokies’ linebackers coach.
Scott was Fuente’s defensive coordinator at Memphis in 2015 and was the Tigers’ linebackers coach from 2010-2014. The Illinois State grad and Orlando, Fla. native also spent time as an outside linebackers and corner backs coach at Tulsa from 2008-2009.
Fuente and Scott worked together on Illinois State’s staff from 2001-2006, and Scott was the Redbirds’ defensive coordinator in 2006 and 2007.
Fuente, of course, kept longtime Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster on his staff when he was hired to succeed Frank Beamer last month. Defensive line coach Charley Wiles and secondary coach Torrian Gray also stuck around to join Fuente’s staff after coaching under Beamer.
