By now you’ve all seen the debacle that was the end of the LSU-Ole Miss game.
Trailing by two at 25-23, a Jordan Jefferson completion got the Tigers down to the five-yard line with just one second left but, more importantly, no timeouts in hand. Somewhat inexplicably, head coach Les Miles failed to get the field goal unit on the field to attempt a game-winning kick.
Instead, Jefferson tried to spike the ball to stop the clock, but it was impossible to do as much and time ran out.
As confused as Miles sounded on the field after the game, he didn’t sound much clearer when he met with the media later.
“I do not know who told him to do that,” Miles said. “You cannot clock (spike) that ball. I’m going to have to find that one out.”
Jefferson, on the other hand, was expecting to see the field goal unit rush out onto the field. Instead, he was left confused as well.
“When Terrance [Tolliver] caught it, I thought the field goal team was going to come out,” Jefferson said. “There was a lot of confusion going on. Nobody knew what to do.”
Failing to get the field goal unit on the field wasn’t the only late LSU head-scratcher, either. Right before the completed Hail Mary, LSU allowed 17 crucial seconds to run off the clock before calling their final timeout.
All in all, it was not Miles & Company’s most brightest of moments at LSU, although it was a huge home win for Houston Nutt and his Rebels.
