There’s not a college coaching staff in the country better equipped to get an inexperienced quarterback ready to play than UCLA’s, where head coach Rick Neuheisel and offensive coordinator Norm Chow have two of the sport’s best minds for the passing game. This year they’re going to need it.Starting quarterback Patrick Cowan has already been lost for the season with a torn ACL, and now the Bruins’ only other experienced quarterback, Ben Olson, is out for two months with a broken foot.UCLA starts its season in three weeks with a tough test against Tennessee, and the Bruins don’t know who their quarterback will be. Kevin Craft, a transfer who has five games of experience as a starter from his time at San Diego State, would seem to be the best option. In addition to Craft, Chris Forcier and Osaar Rasshan will get a shot. But whoever it is, Neuheisel and Chow are going to have an incredibly tough job getting him ready. Both Neuheisel and Chow are known for running sophisticated, pro-style passing games, but the key for the coaches will be not to throw too much at an inexperienced player. Developing an effective passing attack under these circumstances would be a tremendous accomplishment. As for Olson, a 25-year-old senior who has been around forever and has been healthy never, you have to start wondering if he shouldn’t just quit football. The guy has talent as a passer, but he also has a fragile body, and if he does come back, it would only be for a few more games of his college career. Olson is a competitor and won’t want to quit, but football isn’t for everyone, and it might not be for him.
