The Chicago Tribune’s Brian Hamilton reports that wide receiver Michael Floyd was cited for underage drinking over Christmas break back in his home state Minnesota.
This from Hamilton’s report:
Floyd is among five “arrestees” listed on a report from University of Minnesota police, who had responded to a call claiming “6-to-10" people” were involved in a “physical dispute in the street.” According to the report, Floyd admitted to doing “a couple of shots” earlier in the evening and had blood on his hands, feet and shirt after what Floyd told police was a “physical altercation” at a house party.
Floyd, 20, was cited in lieu of arrest for underage consumption of liquor, a misdemeanor. Minneapolis assistant city attorney Chris Dixon told the Tribune that the possible outcomes, if Floyd has no previous record, are a fine, a court appearance or entrance into a diversion program.
As Hamilton noted in his report, the matter will likely be referred to the Office of Residence Life, which has to give a shudder to Notre Dame fans everywhere.
Regardless of how out of touch Res Life can be, I imagine this will likely only result in a bit of extra running for the sophomore wide receiver. As media reports will likely turn this into a big deal, it might be important to remind everybody that Floyd wasn’t arrested, merely ticketed for underage drinking, not exactly a felony.
UPDATE: The Minneapolis Star Tribune is reporting that Floyd was ticketed at the same time as Gopher running back Shady Salamon. The two were ticketed after the car they were in was pulled over and the driver, a 20-year-old college student was ticketed and charged with DWI and underage drinking. Floyd admitted to police that he had been drinking and in “an altercation with a Somali male at a house party.” Floyd and Salamon were high school teammates at Cretin-Derham Hall.
