    Marrero was outrighted to Triple-A Syracuse in mid-September after he had been designated /for assignment. The 32-year-old infielder is a career .191/.246/.279 hitter in 373 career plate appearances at the big league level. He’ll have to settle for a minor league deal this winter if he plans on continuing his playing career.

    It’s the second time in less than a month that he’s been DFA’d. Marrero figures to clear waivers again and, assuming that happens, can elect free agency if he wants.

    Adonis Medina is the other September 1 callup for New York. Marrero, a .192/.247/.280 career hitter in the bigs, will merely add bench depth for the stretch run.

    The 25-year-old right-hander has already appeared in 13 games for the Mets this season, registering a 4.63 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 17/5 K/BB ratio over 23 1/3 innings. He’ll add another arm for manager Buck Showalter to deploy in the middle innings.

    Eduardo Escobar has been scratched from the Mets’ starting lineup for Tuesday’s matchup against the Braves.
    There’s no reason to panic just yet, but it’s worth noting that Escobar just returned to the Mets’ lineup on Monday following a two-game absence due to a minor left oblique issue. Hopefully the move is merely out of an abundance of caution. There should be some clarity on his status shortly. It’ll be Deven Marrero taking over at third base on Tuesday night in his absence.

    Mets fans no doubt were hoping for Brett Baty or Mark Vientos to replace Luis Guillorme (groin), but it will instead be Marrero, who has a career .534 OPS over parts of six seasons and a .683 OPS this year at Syracuse. Marrero does offer some defensive versatility.

    Marrero signed with the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League back in late April and will get an opportunity with the Mets at Triple-A Syracuse. The versatile 31-year-old infielder got into 10 games last year with the Marlins and has appeared in 173 major-league contests since 2015.
