Kahlil Watson is batting eighth for the Guardians in his MLB debut against the Brewers on Thursday.

The Guardians maxed out their three platoon spots against LHP Shane Drohan, leaving Watson to handle right field over fellow prospect Petey Halpin. Watson probably won’t get a huge runway with Chase DeLauter due back soon, but he will get a chance to show his talents and the 12 homers and 15 stolen bases in 56 games at Triple-A Columbus point to someone who could have fantasy value if he hits.

Watson earns his first opportunity in the big leagues with fellow rookie Chase DeLauter (rib) requiring a trip to the injured list. The 23-year-old former first-round pick came over from the Marlins in the Josh Bell trade back in 2023. He was hitting a respectable .255/.370/.491 with 12 homers and 15 steals in 56 games at the Triple-A level this season. It’s challenging to envision Watson offering sustained fantasy relevance, but he’s certainly talented and has an opportunity to show what he can do for a little bit.
  • CLE 3rd Baseman #73
One of the top prospects in Cleveland’s system, Genao possesses strong bat-to-ball skills and is starting to add some over-the-fence pop to his profile. There’s still some work to be done but he’s close to arriving in the big leagues, especially after being added to the Guardians’ 40-man roster during the offseason.
  • CLE Shortstop #97
The 43rd-ranked prospect in baseball, per Baseball America, Genao enters next season in the upper minors with a chance to reach Cleveland before the end of the year. The 21-year-old prodigy is protected from next month’s Rule 5 Draft.
  • CLE Outfield #9
Watson was hitting .247/.337/.461 in 59 games at Double-A with eight home runs and seven steals. The 22-year-old was the 16th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft but struggled in the Miami organization. The Guardians took a gamble on him in the Josh Bell trade back in 2023 and moved Watson out to the outfield from shortstop. He’s now one step closer to making his MLB debut, but this seems mostly like a move to challenge him against better pitching.
  • CLE Shortstop #98
Well, we can just call this the deal of disappointments. The 20-year-old Watson was the Marlins’ first-round pick (No. 16 overall) in the 2021 draft, but he’s hit just .234/.331/.412 through his first 157 pro games while striking out 32 percent of the time. He’s also dealt with some injuries, but there’s a lot of boom or bust potential here. The Guardians will now try to see if he can realize his potential.

Watson also drew a walk. The doubles are nice, so is the steal, but the free pass is the big deal here, as that’s the first time he’s gotten on first via base on balls since May 19. Yep, an entire month passed between free passes, and it’s caused Watson to post an ugly 89/10 K/BB ratio in his first full season. The talent is obvious; Watson is a teenager until next April who has the tools to hit for average, power and steal bases. To say that his approach is going to have to get better to reach those lofty heights is an understatement. Fortunately, there’s plenty of time.

  • CLE Left Fielder #31
The homer is the sixth of the season for Watson, and the steal gives him six thefts, as well. The 19-year-old started out as hot as possible, and even after going through some struggles over the past few weeks, he’s slashing a respectable .260/.308/.521 in his first professional season. There’s a ways to go before Watson is ready, but very few players in the minors have as much upside as he offers.

  • CLE Left Fielder #31
Watson, 18, has been as impressive as any young prospect in baseball to begin the season. That’s already the fourth homer for the 16th pick of last year’s draft, and he’s slashing .391/.440/1.023 with a steal in six games. That draft position may be a bit misleading; Watson was considered one of the best prospects in the class, but fell due to bonus concerns. Other team’s loss is Miami’s gain; Watson can contribute in every fantasy category, and is very likely to stay at shortstop. He could be a star when he’s ready to roll by the end of the 2024 season -- maybe even sooner.

Mish adds that Watson is in Miami taking a physical and that the deal will be officially announced on Sunday. With less than 24 hours remaining before the August 1 signing deadline, the Marlins appear to have beaten the clock, coming to terms with Watson, a standout high school shortstop out of Wake Forest HS in North Carolina. He was considered among the top position players in the 2021 draft class, but shockingly fell to the Marlins with the 16th overall selection earlier this month. He’s expected to sign for well above the expected $3.75 million slot value.

    The steal of the draft.

Watson was not an unknown coming into the 2021 season, but really improved his stock this spring. While not the biggest player, the left-handed hitting shortstop does have a chance to hit for power because of his bat speed and ability to lift the baseball. The hit tool is right behind, and while the long stroke can lead to swing-and-miss, he should make enough contact to hit for a decent average. He can also fly on the bases, and 30-plus steals are not hard to fathom at all. He’ll take a few years to develop, but Watson has a very high ceiling; one that is helped by the fact that he should stick at shortstop.

Gage Jump allowed only one hit over seven innings in the Athletics’ 5-0 shutout of the Angels on Thursday.

Jump was getting a battle at the end of his outing, throwing eight pitches to Denzer Guzman with two outs in the seventh. However, the last of those saw Vaughn Grissom wander too far off first on a ball in the dirt and get picked off by Shea Langeliers. Jump threw 107 pitches, an unusually high total for a rookie hurler in the year 2026, but he was in control from start to finish, striking out a new high of seven batters in his fifth major league start. He’s allowed a total of four runs in his four starts this month, with three of those coming in Las Vegas last week. He should be just fine to use in San Francisco next week.

Ryan Johnson gave up five runs over five innings Thursday in a loss to the Angels.

All five runs came in the first. After a clean single to start the inning, novice outfielder Christian Moore botched Nick Kurtz’s fly to left for a double and back-to-back homers followed. Johnson finally escaped the frame after 35 pitches and then never gave up any extra-base hits or walks afterwards. His career ERA actually dropped from 10.17 to 9.96 with the performance. He’ll probably be sent down for a fresh arm Friday, but we’ll see.

Shea Langeliers hit a three-run homer during the Athletics’ five-run first inning Thursday against the Angels.

Tyler Soderstrom immediately followed with a solo shot to make it 4-0. Langeliers has seen his production slow in recent weeks — he entered tonight with a .179/.250/.396 line over the previous 30 days — but his Statcast page remains very red, and he’s still hitting in one of the league’s best situations for offense in Sacramento. The homer tonight was his 19th and gave him 39 RBI. He’s 10th in MLB in homers and tied for 14th with 48 RBI.

Christian Moore went 1-for-4 with three strikeouts and a pair of misplays in left field in his season debut Thursday against the A’s.

At least the night doesn’t look quite as bad as it would have if Vaughn Grissom hadn’t gotten a hit to bring him to the plate with two outs in the ninth and given him a chance to collect a late single. Moore, though, had a really tough time in left field, a position he’d played just nine times as a pro and sparingly in college. He misjudged Nick Kurtz’s fly to deep left in the first and gave him a double that helped fuel a five-run inning, and he was charged with an error on a tougher play in the fifth, when he slightly overran Jonah Heim’s fly and had it go off his glove for an error. The Angels might keep Moore in left field for now, but he’d surely be more comfortable at second or third.

Braves acquired C Joey Bart from the Pirates for RHP Hunter Stratton.

This frees up the Pirates to carry on with Endy Rodríguez and Henry Davis behind the plate. Bart has missed the last five weeks with a foot infection, but he’s about ready to return now after going 4-for-16 with a homer in five rehab games, and that the Braves DFA’d Sandy Léon to make room for him suggests he will come off the IL and join the team right away. Bart seemed to have a breakthrough 2024, hitting .265/.337/.462 with 13 homers in 282 plate appearances, but he hasn’t kept it up in coming in at .251/.345/.346 with six homers in 394 plate appearances the last two seasons. The Braves will have him back up Drake Baldwin for now, but like they did with Jonah Heim, they could move on from Bart once Sean Murphy is healthy.

Pirates acquired RHP Hunter Stratton from the Braves for C Joey Bart.

Stratton was designated for assignment on Wednesday. This returns him to the organization that drafted him in 2017 and for which he made 47 major league appearances between 2023 and ’25. The 29-year-old has a 3.75 ERA and a 60/17 K/BB in 69 2/3 innings as a major leaguer. He’d pitched just one inning for the Braves in the majors this season, and the Pirates will stick him in Triple-A for now.

Braves designated C Sandy Léon for assignment.

Léon was 4-for-44 with an 18/0 K/BB in 21 games for the Braves, so it’s hard to blame the team for seeking a backup catcher upgrade with Sean Murphy out. He should clear waivers and then he can decide whether he’s up for another stint at Gwinnett. He was playing in Mexico before the Braves signed him last month.

Royals’ manager Matt Quatraro told reporters after Thursday’s game that Bobby Witt Jr. went for additional testing on his injured right knee.

Aside from that, the Royals’ skipper didn’t have any updates to provide on the status of his franchise cornerstone. It’s possible that they’re just taking every possible precaution here, but fantasy managers should at least prepare for the fact that they could be without Witt for at least the weekend, if not longer.

Nick Loftin went 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI on Thursday evening as the Royals crushed the Cardinals 14-6.

Loftin doubled in the third inning and was left stranded there. He then smacked a two-run double in the fourth that extended the Royals’ lead to 11-3. He’s seeing increased action at third base while Maikel Garcia is shelved. For the season, he’s hitting .245/.348/.400 with one homer and 20 RBI across 133 plate appearances.

Jac Caglianone went 1-for-5 and belted a two-run homer in a lopsided victory over the Cardinals on Thursday evening.

Caglianone did his damage off of Gordon Graceffo in the fourth inning, with his 402-foot (110.0-mph EV) two-run blast increasing the Royals’ lead to 9-3. That would be his only hit in five at-bats on the night. For the season, the 23-year-old slugger is now hitting .266/.338/.439 with nine homers and 22 RBI.
