Castano was recalled from Triple-A on Sunday, optioned back on Monday and now returns on Thursday as Brenton Doyle heads to the injured list. The 27-year-old hurler allowed just one run over 2 1/3 innings during his last brief stay with the Rockies. He’ll function in a middle relief role.

Castaño heads back to the minors after allowing one run over 2 1/3 innings during a brief stint with the Rockies over the weekend. The 27-year-old middle reliever was claimed off waivers from the Mariners last month.

The 27-year-old right-hander was claimed off of waivers from the Mariners in mid-April. Castaño has been terrific at the Triple-A level this season, posting a 1.10 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and a 12/7 K/BB ratio over 16 1/3 innings. He’ll work in a middle relief role for the Rockies.

Castaño was serving as starting pitching depth for spring training. The 27-year-old is on the 40-man roster, so we guess he’s technically the seventh starter in Seattle, but it’s hard to see him getting many chances after pitching to a 5.19 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, and 97/51 K/BB ratio in 126 2/3 innings at Triple-A in 2025.

The 26-year-old hurler appeared in just one game during his time with the Mariners, giving up three runs on four hits over his three innings of work. He’ll continue to serve as extra depth at the Triple-A level until he’s needed once more. Casey Lawrence was added to the M’s roster in a corresponding move on Thursday.

The Mariners wanted to add a fresh arm to their bullpen that could give them some length on Friday night, as their bullpen has been taxed recently and Friday’s starter Emerson Hancock has struggled to work deep into games. Castano had been working as a starter at Triple-A Tacoma where he registered a 3.43 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and a 28/19 K/BB ratio across 44 2/3 innings. He’ll be making his big league debut if he gets into a game with the M’s.

Even with George Kirby (shoulder) set to open the season on the injured list, it was always unlikely that Castano would break camp with the big league club. He’ll open the season in the rotation at Triple-A Tacoma while Danner and Fleming function as extra bullpen depth for the M’s.

Castano earns a spot on Seattle’s 40-man roster to shield him from next month’s Rule 5 Draft after posting a respectable 4.38 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 108/43 K/BB ratio across 125 1/3 innings (29 appearances, 26 starts) between Double-A Arkansas and Triple-A Tacoma.

Blue Jays’ skipper John Schneider told reporters on Friday that Max Scherzer received three cortisone injections in his injured thumb over the All-Star break.

While Schneider didn’t specifically call it a setback, he called it a “pause” in Scherzer’s rehab and noted that he’ll resume throwing soon. It’s not an ideal situation as it’s going to be several weeks at a minimum before Scherzer may be ready to return. The 41-year-old hurler has been limited to just six starts and 22 innings overall on the season.
