Jakob Junis notched his fifth save with a scoreless ninth versus the Padres on Sunday.

Jacob Latz had the day off after pitching Friday and Saturday. Working with a one-run lead, Junis got into trouble right away, giving up singles to pinch-hitter Fernando Tatis Jr. and Xander Bogaerts to start the ninth, but he then retired Ty France, Sung-Mun Song and Rodolfo Durán to end the inning. Junis has a 1.97 ERA through 32 innings this season.

Jacob Latz had pitched two days in a row, so it was suspected that Junis would lose tonight. The 33-year-old journeyman has a 1.69 ERA in 26 2/3 innings of relief work for the Rangers.

Not good. Jakob Junis will take the ball to open a bullpen game on Monday night in his place. Eovaldi was in line for a two-start week against Arizona and Houston after spinning an eight-inning masterpiece against the Yankees his last time out. The 36-year-old veteran will presumably undergo imaging to determine the severity of the issue and whether he’ll require a trip to the injured list. It’s obviously an alarming development for the Rangers, and fantasy managers as well. There should be a definitive update on his status at some point shortly.

Latz has seemed like a candidate for saves in the Texas bullpen for weeks now, but this is his first save of the year. He joins Jakob Junis (three), Tyler Alexander (two) and Cole Winn (one) in having earned saves for the Rangers. Junis set him up with a scoreless eighth tonight, while Winn wound up with the win for pitching a scoreless sixth. It’s difficult to recommend any one Texas reliever right now, but Latz is probably the best bet of the bunch from an ERA standpoint.

It doesn’t sound like there are any plans to put Garcia on the injured list, but that could change if he’s not ready to pitch in a couple days. The 29-year-old has been unavailable since last Friday. Jakob Junis appears to be the favorite to continue closing games for the Rangers.

This was a 3-0 game after eighth, but the Rangers scored twice in the ninth to take away the save situation. It didn’t appear that Jakob Junis ever warmed up, so this probably would have been a save chance for Latz if the Rangers hadn’t scored. Cole Winn pitched a hitless eighth for a hold.

The Rangers’ flavor of the week at closer was called upon to protect a two-run lead with two men on and one out in the seventh inning. He did his job, retiring the next two hitters in order to escape the jam. He returned for the eighth though and ended up loading the bases on an infield single, double and an intentional walk with two outs before handing the ball off to Jacob Latz. He then allowed a bases-clearing double that charged three runs to Junis’ ledger. Even with this rough outing, Junis still sports a strong 2.89 ERA and 0.75 WHIP over 9 1/3 innings while converting each of his first three save chances.

Jakob Junis is the closer of the Texas Rangers. Weird. That’s the third save of the season for the right-hander, and he’s gotten the ninth inning in his last three appearances. The 33-year-old has looked the part thus far, and did so again Sunday with a pair of strikeouts versus one walk and not allowing a hit. It seems like the leash for Junis will be thin, but for those hunting for saves, if he’s still unrostered, there it is.

Winn gave up a leadoff single to Cole Young, but he then retired Luke Raley, Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodríguez in order. Winn has thrown 6 1/3 scoreless innings to begin the year, and his velocity, which has been down about two mph from last year, came back up some today; he averaged 95.8 mph with his fastball, compared to 94.1 mph in his first six outings and 96.2 mph in his 33 appearances last year. Though we do have to note that Jakob Junis, who earned saves the last two days, wasn’t available in this one, Winn seems like a threat for more saves in Texas.

Junis entered for the ninth inning with a one-run lead for his second save chance in as many days. He gave up a pair of base hits before generating two fly outs and a groundout to end the game with his second save. The 33-year-old veteran right-hander has clearly worked his way into the saves mix for the Rangers, but this remains a fluid situation while Junis isn’t particularly skilled with closer material. Still, he’s worth an add in deep leagues at the moment if chasing saves in the early going.

It’s just the second save of the year for Junis, and it’s worth noting that he was facing the heart of Seattle’s lineup. He got Cal Raleigh to ground out, and while he did plunk Julio Rodríguez, he was able to get Josh Naylor to hit in a game-ending double play and needed just four pitches to get out of the inning. Robert Garcia worked the eighth inning against the bottom of the Mariners’ lineup, so this is a situation to monitor for those who roster Garcia. It’s a situation to avoid if at all possible for those who don’t.

Cristopher Sánchez was roughed up in a no-decision against the Nationals on Thursday evening, giving up five runs on seven hits across his five frames.

The star southpaw struck out six batters on the night while issuing one free pass. He served up a solo homer to Curtis Mead that ignited a four-run uprising in the first inning for the Nationals. They also scratched out a run in the third before Sánchez settled in. He got 17 swings and misses on 92 pitches in the game — eight on his devastating changeup — while posting a CSW of 28 percent. He’ll try to get back in the win column as he totes a 2.13 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and a 127/21 K/BB ratio (110 innings) into Tuesday’s showdown against the Pirates.

Curtis Mead went 1-for-5 and swatted his 14th home run of the season in a losing effort against the Phillies on Thursday night.

Mead opened the scoring in the contest as he ambushed a first-pitch sinker from Cristopher Sanchez for a 409-foot (107.5-mph EV) solo shot in the home half of the first inning. That would be his only hit in five at-bats. For the season, the 25-year-old infielder is now hitting .223/.325/.476 with the aforementioned 14 long balls and 39 RBI on the season.

Cade Cavalli posted a quality start in a no-decision against the Cardinals on Thursday evening, surrendering two runs on five hits over six strong frames.

Cavalli struck out seven batters on the night while issuing only one base on balls. All of the damage done against him came in his final inning of work on a two-run blast by Brandon Marsh. Cavalli then exited with a 5-2 advantage and in line for a victory, but the Nationals’ bullpen couldn’t hang on for him. He got 15 whiffs on 97 pitches in the ballgame, registering a CSW of 31 percent. He’ll bring a 4.00 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and an 89/29 K/BB ratio (83 1/3 innings) into Tuesday’s matchup against the Red Sox in Boston.

    Royals released RHP Aaron Sanchez.

The 33-year-old hurler really struggled in 13 appearances (12 starts) at Triple-A Omaha, posting a 9.43 ERA, 1.98 WHIP and a 40/26 K/BB ratio over 42 frames. It’s unclear if Sanchez plans to explore other opportunities or if he’ll consider hanging up his cleats.

    Royals released RHP Luke Jackson.

The 34-year-old former closer had been with the Royals on a minor league pact. Jackson made 10 appearances during his time at Triple-A Omaha, posting a 5.27 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and a 16/4 K/BB ratio across 13 2/3 innings. He’s now free to latch on elsewhere if he finds another worthwhile opportunity.

Angels signed RHP Dillon Tate to a minor league contract.

The 32-year-old hurler hasn’t pitched since he was released by the Blue Jays at the end of the 2025 season. He’ll report to the team’s spring training complex in Arizona where he’ll build up before presumably heading out to Triple-A Salt Lake. It’s a nice low-risk signing for the Angels as they could wind up with a viable bullpen arm out of it.

Taylor Trammell belted a go-ahead solo homer in the sixth inning on Thursday night, powering the Astros to a 2-1 victory over the Tigers in the opener of their four-game weekend series at Comerica Park.

The Astros had done nothing against Troy Melton to that point in the game, as Melton had retired the first 16 batters that he faced in order before Trammell crushed an 0-1 fastball for a 422-foot (110.5-mph EV) solo shot that gave the Astros a lead they’d never relinquish. Trammell finished the night 1-for-2 and is now hitting .280/.337/.439 with two homers and nine RBI in 82 at-bats with the Astros this season.

Jeremy Peña went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and a run scored as the Astros triumphed over the Tigers on Thursday evening in Detroit.

Peña singled off of Troy Melton with two outs in the sixth inning but was left stranded there. He then led off the ninth with a single off of Kenley Jansen, swiped second base, took third on a ground ball and scored a valuable insurance run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Isaac Paredes. On the season, the 28-year-old shortstop is now hitting .290/.356/.450 with six homers, 19 RBI and eight stolen bases in 188 plate appearances.
