Juan Soto (back) remains out of the lineup for the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Cubs.

The Mets have Francisco Lindor back for the first time since late April. Unfortunately, they’re going to be without Soto in this one. It’ll be Eric Wagaman filling in at DH. The 27-year-old generational talent winds up sitting out both games of Wednesday’s doubleheader with back tightness. It’s impossible to rule out a potential trip to the injured list prior to Thursday’s series finale if Soto isn’t showing improvement. There should be additional clarity on his status following Wednesday’s nightcap against the Cubs.
Brewers travel to Pittsburgh for Sunday Leadoff

Unsurprisingly, Soto was voted into the starting group even with the Mets having a disappointing 2026 campaign. He’ll be joined in the outfield by Andy Pages and Brandon Marsh. The infield will include 3B Max Muncy, SS CJ Abrams, 2B Ozzie Albies and 1B Freddie Freeman, with Drake Baldwin elected the starting catcher and Shohei Ohtani the designated hitter.

Soto drove the Mets offense in this one. His two-run homer – that looked like a cue-shot off the bat – stood as their only run until the ninth inning when Soto singled just before Bo Bichette drove in their third and final run in a late rally that fell short. He also had a demonstrative challenge of a called third strike that was overturned and turned into a walk. He’s had a fantastic season with 18 home runs and a .971 OPS through 69 games despite the Mets’ struggles.
  • NYM Center Fielder #88
Robert has been on the shelf with a herniated disc in his back since late April. The 28-year-old center fielder’s impending return will complicate New York’s outfield mix, especially since rookie A.J. Ewing has been tearing the cover off the ball recently. The logical move would be to allow Juan Soto to get some extra time at DH with Ewing and fellow rookie Carson Benge in the outfield corners once he’s back. He’ll likely require at least a week or two of minor league at-bats to get back up to speed following the lengthy layoff. The durability concerns aren’t going away, but it wouldn’t be surprising if Robert were an impactful fantasy contributor during the second half based on his raw talent and track record.

Soto drew a walk in the third inning, then singled and scored a run in the sixth. With a runner on in the seventh, he tripled to center field to extend the Mets’ lead before scoring his second run on a sacrifice fly. The 27-year-old star outfielder is hitting .299/.399/.567 with 17 homers, 38 runs scored, 39 RBI, and six steals across 272 plate appearances.

Wagaman came off the bench to launch a two-run homer off Hoby Milner and it got the Mets to within a run at 3-2. They would tie it, but they fell in extras for yet another loss in what has been a horrendous first half for the Metropolitans. Wagaman has homered twice in 2026 in his 22 at-bats with the club while slashing .227/.320/.500 in that limited playing time.

Fortunately for the Mets, their superstar slugger is feeling much improved after a full day of rest. He’s serving as the team’s designated hitter and will bat third against Cubs’ left-hander Matthew Boyd on Thursday night in New York.
  • NYM Shortstop #0
Mauricio fractured his left thumb on May 3rd and was expected to miss six to eight weeks, so he’s right on track in his recovery. With how much the Mets’ bats have slumped, it wouldn’t be out of the question for him to come back and push Brett Baty, Eric Wagaman, or Jared Young back to the minors. Mark Vientos has no minor league options left, which is why he will likely remain.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters Soto’s back locked up on him and he left Tuesday’s contest to undergo treatment. It doesn’t sounds like a significant concern for fantasy managers, but back issues can be complex and the Mets can’t really afford to take any chances. It’s possible he’s ready to return at some point during Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Cubs at Citi Field.

Soto looked uncomfortable during each of his at-bats in the early stages of the contest before being replaced by Jared Young in left field to open the fifth inning. He finished 0-for-2 at the plate. The 27-year-old generational talent’s exit appears to be precautionary in nature, but back issues can be complicated matters. He’ll undergo further evaluation and possibly imaging to determine the severity of the issue. There should be an update on his status leading into Wednesday’s doubleheader at Citi Field.

It’s the last thing the Mets need right now. Soto was replaced by Jared Young in left field to open the fifth inning after going 0-for-2 at the plate. It’s a bit unclear whether he suffered an injury or was dealing with a physical issue prior to leaving the contest. There should be some clarity on his status shortly.

Nationals optioned RHP Cole Henry to Triple-A Rochester.

Justin Bruihl was removed from Monday’s game against the Brewers with a left ankle sprain.

It sounds like a potential injured list situation for Bruihl after he suffered the injury while recording the final out of the sixth inning during Monday’s contest. The 29-year-old southpaw has delivered a respectable 3.70 ERA across 41 1/3 innings this season in his Cardinals debut.

David Hamilton was removed from Monday’s game against the Cardinals with left hamstring tightness.

Hamilton was lifted for a pinch-runner following a two-run double in the seventh inning that put Milwaukee ahead. He’ll undergo further evaluation to determine the severity of the issue. There should be an update on his status following the contest.

James Wood crushed a grand slam on Monday, leading the Nationals to a 12-11 victory over the Astros.

Wood’s 446-foot grand slam off Astros reliever AJ Blubaugh traveled a staggering 446 feet to straightaway center field and gave Washington a commanding six-run lead that they wouldn’t relinquish. It was his 24th big fly of the year. He also walked three times and picked up his 14th stolen base of the season in this one. The 23-year-old rising star was named to his second consecutive All-Star Game over the weekend and continues to deliver first-round caliber fantasy value this season, hitting .268/.398/.541 with 81 runs scored, 24 homers, 60 RBI and 14 steals through 92 games.

Brice Matthews went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer in Monday’s loss to the Nationals.

Matthews made things interesting with a three-run shot against Nationals reliever Cole Henry in the eighth inning that brought Houston within a single run at the time. It was his seventh big fly of the year and first time going deep since June 13.

CJ Abrams went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer and a stolen base on Monday in a win over the Astros.

Abrams took Houston starter Mike Burrows deep in the third inning for a game-tying homer to match his home run total from last season. He’s now one big fly shy of his previous career-high mark of 20 round-trippers set back in 2024. The 25-year-old speedster also picked up his 15th stolen base of the season in this one. He’s been arguable the most impactful fantasy shortstop this season with 19 homers, 64 RBI and 15 thefts through 88 games.

Curtis Mead went 3-for-5 with a solo homer and three RBI on Monday in a win over the Astros.

Mead put Washington ahead with a fifth-inning tater off Houston starter Mike Burrows. The 25-year-old former top prospect has put together a certifiable breakthrough campaign in his Nationals debut with a career-high 15 homers through 75 games.

Clayton Beeter recorded four outs on Monday against the Astros to collect his seventh save of the season.

Beeter got the call to record the final out of the eighth inning, inducing a harmless ground ball from Jose Altuve. He came back out to face the heart of Houston’s lineup and spun an impressive perfect frame. He struck out Yordan Alvarez, got Isaac Paredes to ground out and coaxed a game-ending fly ball form Christian Walker. The 27-year-old appears to be the clear choice for saves in Washington heading into the All-Star break.

Miles Mikolas was lit up for seven runs over six innings on Monday in a win over the Astros.

Mikolas gave up nine hits, including a pair of homers. He struck out three and handed out a pair of free passes. He’s unlikely to take the ball again later this week as he’s facing a five-game suspension for his on-field actions during last week’s brawl with the Red Sox that will go into effect once the appeal process concludes. It’s possible he could start this weekend against the Yankees if his five-game ban is reduced on appeal. He’s obviously not a recommended fantasy option at this point.

Mike Burrows was charged with a season-high 10 runs — seven earned — over 4 1/3 innings on Monday in a loss to the Nationals.

Burrows was staked to an early five-run lead and wound up giving it all back with a couple calamitous frames. He gave up a whopping nine hits, including a three-run homer to CJ Abrams and a solo shot to Curtis Mead. He struck out three and issued two walks. The unexpected implosion raises his full-season ERA from 5.58 to 5.99 across 94 2/3 innings. He’ll close out a two-start week with a road matchup against the Rangers on Sunday to put a bow on the first half of the season.
