Victor Bericoto delivers walkoff homer against A’s

Victor Bericoto went 2-for-4 and hit a walkoff homer in the bottom of the ninth to give the Giants a 2-1 win over the A’s on Wednesday.

The A’s were up 1-0 before Rafael Devers homered to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth. Bericoto ended things three batters later with his second homer in 22 plate appearances since being called up on May 22. Bericoto has strictly played against lefties since joining the Giants, but the homer tonight came off against a righty in Elvis Alvarado. It doesn’t figure to lead to a big boost in playing time, and he still might be sent down once Heliot Ramos comes off the IL. He was the hero tonight, though.
Mariners call up elite pitching prospect Anderson
The Seattle Mariners called up top pitching prospect Kade Anderson, who is expected to start against the Chicago Cubs this Saturday. Eric Samulski emphasizes why he should be added in all fantasy formats.

Bericoto gets his opportunity atop San Francisco’s lineup to face lefty Patrick Sandoval after Drew Gilbert spent a couple days in that spot earlier this week. The hard-hitting 24-year-old has homered four times in 31 games during his rookie campaign, but lacks the on-base skillset of a traditional top-of-the-order table-setter. Still, he figures to get some chances against left-handed starters down the home stretch.
  • SF Right Fielder #78
Bericoto returns to San Francisco’s outfield mix after missing just over one month with an oblique strain. His path to playing time is much clearer since the Giants shipped Heliot Ramos to the Yankees at the trade deadline. The 24-year-old makes plenty of hard contact, as evidenced by a nearly 47 percent hard-hit rate this season, and he’s batted .293 (17-for-58) with four homers and one steal in the majors.
  • Bericoto has been on the injured list since July 10th with an oblique strain. With Heliot Ramos now playing for the Yankees, there is a good chance that Bericoto could see regular playing time when he returns from the injured list. He’s slashing .293/.305/.552 in 59 plate appearances with the Giants while hitting four home runs. He doesn’t walk much at all, but he has a 46.5% hard-hit rate and a 91.5 percent zone contact rate, so he will do damage on pitches in the zone. He just needs to chase a bit less.
  • Bericoto sustained the injury during Thursday’s battle against the Rockies. No word yet on how long he’ll be shelved for, but oblique issues are notoriously tricky and can tend to linger if not handled properly. Grant McCray was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to take his place on the Giants’ roster on Friday.
  • Bericoto has a three-game hitting streak, where he has gone 5-for-12 with three RBI and a steal. He has also hit 14-for-37 (.378) with three home runs, six runs scored, and eight RBI in 10 games since becoming a regular starter with Matt Chapman (abs) on the injured list. It would seem like the Giants could find another hitter to give an off day to, but they will start Drew Gilbert in center field with Bericoto on the bench.
  • SF 3rd Baseman #26
Chapman has been able to tolerate the strain, but he aggravated the injury in the sixth inning against the D-backs and was forced to depart. If he needs to go on the IL, the Giants will likely stick Casey Schmitt at third base and give more outfield time to Victor Bericoto and Drew Gilbert.
  • SF Designated Hitter #8
If you’re going to have to take a day off on occasion, doing so against Chris Sale isn’t the worst idea in the world. Heliot Ramos will function as the Giants’ designated hitter in his place on Sunday while Victor Bericoto draws a start in right field and will bat eighth for the Giants.
  • SF Left Fielder #17
Ramos, out since May 16 with a quad strain, has gone 7-for-23 with a homer in six minor league games, which is likely two or three more than he would have played in if the Giants were more excited about getting him back. There aren’t going to be enough at-bats to go around with both Ramos and Victor Bericoto on the roster, so sending down Bericoto seems the likely option. Even though he’s one of the Giants’ best hitters, Ramos might just be a part-timer while everyone is healthy. Starting Ramos, Jung Hoo Lee and Casey Schmitt together in the outfield isn’t something the team will be able to do too often.
  • SF 2nd Baseman #1
Arraez was hurt when he fouled a ball off his foot on Tuesday. His return means Casey Schmitt is shifting back to the outfield. That’d seem like bad news for Victor Bericoto, but since he homered the last two days, the Giants are sacrificing some defense by sitting Drew Gilbert and playing Jung Joo Lee in center tonight.
  • SF Shortstop #2
Adames is out because of lower-half discomfort he felt during last night’s game. As of now, there’s no indication this will be a lengthy absence. Casey Schmitt will start at shortstop with Victor Bericoto in left field, batting eighth, and Jonah Cox in center field, batting ninth.

Rangers designated OF Jarred Kelenic for assignment.

This is the third time that the Rangers have DFA’d the former top prospect. Each previous time he has returned on a minor league contract and eventually earned another chance with the Rangers. It’s possible that happens again this time around, though his days of fantasy relevancy are in the rearview mirror.

Trevor Larnach is not in the Twins’ starting lineup for Sunday’s battle against the Padres.

It’s a rare off day for Larnach with an opposing right-hander on the mound. Alen Roden will start in his place in left field and will bat seventh for the Twins against Padres’ veteran Walker Buehler.

Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Sunday that he expects Ryan Weathers to return in some capacity before the 2026 season is through.

That suggests that the Yankees could envision him returning in a bullpen role. He’ll be shut down from throwing for the next two-to-four weeks before starting to ramp back up after landing on the injured list with a left forearm flexor strain on Sunday.

Ezequiel Tovar (illness) returned to the Rockies’ starting lineup on Sunday.

Tovar was removed from Friday night’s contest due to illness and then sat out on Saturday as he was still feeling under the weather. While his health has improved, his offensive game hasn’t, as he’s slashing a cringe-inducing .204/.251/.326 with just nine homers and 38 RBI on the season.

Rockies activated INF/OF Tyler Freeman from the 10-day injured list; optioned him to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Freeman had already been stationed at Triple-A Albuquerque on a minor league rehab assignment, and he’ll stay there for a bit longer until a spot opens up on the Rockies’ bench. The 27-year-old has hit just .247/.317/.314 with three homers, 23 RBI and six stolen bases in 288 plate appearances with the Rockies on the season.

With Kyle Karros (concussion) landing on the injured list on Sunday, Ritter will return to add depth to the Rockies’ infield. The 25-year-old is just 1-for-7 (.143) in his limited action with the big league club this season and can be ignored for fantasy purposes.

Rockies placed INF Kyle Karros on the 7-day concussion injured list.

Karros had just returned from the concussion injured list on Friday, but he’s apparently still feeling the after-effects and will need to make his way through the concussion protocol once again before returning. Ryan Ritter was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move on Sunday.

Tigers optioned LHP Enmanuel De Jesus to Triple-A Toledo.

The 29-year-old southpaw has done a nice job in 30 appearances with the Tigers this season, compiling a 3.83 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and a 39/15 K/BB ratio over 42 1/3 innings. Unfortunately, he has logged a heavy workload recently and the Tigers needed to add a fresh arm for a bullpen game on Sunday. De Jesus should get another chance at the MLB level in relatively short order.

Tigers selected the contract of LHP Andrew Sears from Triple-A Toledo.

It’s the first trip to the big leagues for the 23-year-old southpaw who was a 10th round selection by the Tigers from the 2023 draft. He has done an exceptional job across four minor league levels this season, registering a 2.16 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and a 67/20 K/BB ratio over 58 1/3 innings. He’s expected to serve in a bulk role against the Royals on Sunday.

Tigers designated OF James Outman for assignment.

Outman had been on a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Toledo, but he’ll get the boot from the club’s 40-man roster as they needed the space for Andrew Sears on Sunday. With the emergence of Brett Callahan, his spot on the MLB roster became expendable.
