Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Trent Grisham (hamstring) is likely to return during their upcoming six-game homestand next week.

Boone added that Grisham is likely to play in at least one minor league rehab contest prior to returning to New York’s lineup. The 29-year-old outfielder hit the injured list with a right hamstring strain back on June 13 after slashing .232/.341/.406 with eight homers and six steals as the Yankees’ primary leadoff hitter against right-handed pitching. It sounds like he’s on track to make it back at some point next week with all-or-nothing rookie slugger Spencer Jones likely headed back to the minors as the corresponding move.

It’s unclear whether this is a one-game outlier or the start of a larger trend for Yankees manager Aaron Boone. We’ll see.

The 25-year-old has slashed .224/.314/.355 with two homers, seven RBI, one stolen base and a 35/10 K/BB ratio over 86 plate appearances with the Bombers this season.

Cody Bellinger left Saturday’s game in the eighth inning with an apparent right leg injury.

Bellinger came up a little lame while running out a double in the top of the eighth. He stayed in to run and waved off the trainer when they started to pay him a visit on the basepaths, but he didn’t come back out for defense afterwards. If Bellinger needs to miss some time, the Yankees would likely recall Spencer Jones.

Most teams usually recall an extra pitcher for a doubleheader, but the Yankees will go with a bat instead. Jones has hit .233/.317/.370 with two homers, seven RBI, one stolen base, and a 34/9 K/BB ratio over 82 plate appearances with the Yankees this season. Perhaps the team is hoping he gets into a big home run today in the hopes of boosting his trade value at the deadline.

Trent Grisham went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer to lead the Yankees to a 4-2 win over the Nationals on Saturday.

Grisham knocked a base hit in the sixth inning, then put the Yankees ahead with a two-run homer off Clayton Beeter in the eighth, putting New York in position to steal the late victory. The 29-year-old outfielder is up to 10 homers, 48 runs scored, and 40 RBI while slashing .238/.338/.426 across 299 plate appearances.

Trent Grisham is not in the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Rays

With the Rays throwing left-hander Shane McClanahan, the Yankees will play Max Schuemann in center field and have Grisham on the bench. In five games since coming off the injured list, Grisham has gone 4-for-18 with two doubles, a home run, five runs scored, two RBI, and a steal. He also has a 58 percent hard-hit rate in that incredibly small sample size, so he should heat up again with more at-bats under his belt.

Grisham is back atop New York’s lineup for the second straight contest against a right-handed starter after going 2-for-4 with his ninth home run of the season and a pair of RBI in his return from the injured list during Friday’s series opener. The 29-year-old wound up missing nearly three weeks recovering from a right hamstring strain.

Yankees optioned OF Spencer Jones to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The Yankees needed to clear a spot on their roster for Brendan Beck to start on Saturday, and with Trent Grisham back from the injured list Jones became expendable. The dynamic 25-year-old hit .233/.317/.370 with two homers, seven RBI, one stolen base and a 34/9 K/BB ratio over 82 plate appearances during his time with the Bombers.

He’ll likely be starting today against the Twins in his return. Grisham has been on the shelf with a hamstring strain since mid-June, he was hitting .232/.341/.406 with eight homers and six stolen bases before the injury. He’ll be a reasonable deep-league starter, at the very least, going forward.

Oh, so that’s why Detroit DFA’d Jake Rogers. The Tigers started both of their catchers tonight, with Dillon Dingler serving as a DH, and Valencia, who was recalled Monday, hit his third and fourth homers in just seven games (four starts) as a major leaguer. True, the second one tonight was hit off Chadwick Tromp, but this still an awfully impressive start. He’s the first player to have four hits and two homers in one of his first seven career games since Jose Siri in 2021 and second since Danny Espinosa in 2010.

Troy Melton pitched three-hit ball for seven innings and combined with Ty Madden on a shutout of the Orioles on Tuesday.,

Melton’s 23.1 percent strikeout rate isn’t overwhelming, but he’s been about as effective as any pitcher in the majors since joining the Detroit rotation two months ago, going 6-1 with a 1.75 ERA in 67 innings over 11 starts. Regression will surely come at some point; he could well remain an above average starter, but the stuff seems shy of ace quality. He’s a really good bet again next week, though, as he’s due to face the Mariners in Seattle.

Kremer gave up a pair of homers, bringing his total surrendered to 12 in 36 innings this season. He’s allowed 21 runs in 25 innings in his five starts since coming off the injured list, and he’s 1-4 with a 6.50 ERA in seven starts overall. If the Orioles can bring in a starter before the deadline, it’s very obvious that it’s Kremer who is going to be bumped from the rotation.

The only previous time he had done that was in his very first game on Opening Day against the Padres. The four runs scored doubled his previous high.

The GIDP came against catcher Chadwick Tromp in the eighth. If the Tigers sell, one imagines Torkelson has to be very much available. He’s hitting .207/.300/.414 in 417 plate appearances, and he’s been a real asset for half of one season in the last three years. Maybe he can pull an Andrew Vaughn, but if he’s not considerably better the rest of the way, he should be a non-tender candidate.

Pete Fairbanks pitched a scoreless ninth in a save against the Phillies on Tuesday.

Fairbanks was as efficient as he’s been all year; throwing 8-of-9 pitches for strikes while whiffing a pair in a scoreless inning. That’s not quite the compliment he’d like, as the 32-year-old still has an ERA of 6.96 on the season because of some wretched results in the first three months of the campaign. Still, Fairbanks now has 14 saves on the season, and it seems unlikely he’s going to give up the closing gig as long as he’s a member of the Miami pitching staff.

David Festa will undergo season-ending right shoulder surgery this week.

There is a lot to unpack here. Festa is slated to undergo arthroscopic surgery for a shoulder impingement in addition to a procedure in his pectoral area to address thoracic outlet syndrome symptoms. It’s unclear how long he’ll be sidelined, but he’s obviously done for the rest of the season. The bigger question is whether he’ll be ready for a normal spring training.
