Cameron Cauley sits after impressive MLB debut

Cameron Cauley is not in the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Guardians.

Nicky Lopez is at second base to face Guardians righty Tanner Bibee. Cauley went 1-for-3 with a triple and a pair of runs scored in his major-league debut on Monday night in Cleveland. The versatile 23-year-old figures to play regularly against left-handed starters and possesses an interesting mix of fantasy-relevant tools, most notably elite speed on the bases. He’s a name to watch in deeper mixed leagues in case he’s able to carve out a semi-regular role with the Rangers in the coming weeks.
Brewers travel to Pittsburgh for Sunday Leadoff
Looking to stay alive in the NL Wild Card race, the Pirates welcome the NL Central-leading Brewers to PNC Park for a divisional showdown on MLB Sunday Leadoff at 12pm ET on Peacock and NBCSN.

Seager was lifted for rookie Cameron Cauley prior to his first at-bat of the contest. The 32-year-old fantasy stalwart has been snake-bitten by injuries this season, as he’s battled back issues in addition to missing time with a concussion earlier this month. There should be an update on his status following the contest.
  • TEX Shortstop #27
Cauley is an interesting prospect for fantasy managers in deeper mixed leagues since he offers a ton of defensive versatility and a little bit of power/speed combo upside to dream on. The 23-year-old has put together an impressive season on the doorstep of the big leagues, slashing .262/.363/.407 with eight homers and 29 steals in 343 plate appearances over 74 games at the Triple-A level. He’s a name to watch closely, especially if he’s able to carve out a semi-regular role with the Rangers. He figures to receive most of his opportunities against left-handed pitching for now.
  • TEX Shortstop #5
Seager took batting practice on Tuesday but was unable to clear concussion protocols in time for the day game on Wednesday. There remains a strong chance that he will play on Thursday in the first game against the Blue Jays. Ezequiel Duran will start at shortstop on Wednesday with Nicky Lopez at second base.
  • TEX Shortstop #5
Seager receives some extra time off after a home-plate collision during Thursday’s game against Kansas City left him with rib and jaw soreness. He had been heating up, hitting safely in four of his last five games with two homers since returning from a back issue that sidelined him for a couple of weeks last month. It’ll be defensive specialist Nicky Lopez drawing another start at shortstop in his absence.
  • TEX 2nd Baseman #20
Duran was replaced by Nicky Lopez at shortstop with Justin Foscue taking over at second base after going 0-for-2 at the dish. It doesn’t sound like a serious concern heading into Thursday’s series finale.
  • TEX 2nd Baseman #33
Lopez makes sense as a versatile reserve infielder for the Rangers, who are currently without starting shortstop Corey Seager in addition to utility specialist Josh Smith. The 31-year-old defensive wizard got into four games for the Cubs over a one-month span earlier this season. He can be safely ignored for fantasy purposes.
  • CHC 2nd Baseman #12
Lopez will presumably stick around with the Cubs as organizational depth after being removed from the club’s active roster last weekend. The 31-year-old defensive wizard makes sense as an emergency stopgap but he doesn’t offer enough offensive impact to be anything close to an everyday option at this stage of his career.
  • CHC 2nd Baseman #12
Chicago has decided to jettison Lopez after the defensive specialist appeared in just four games after being called up back on April 24. The 31-year-old is merely emergency organizational depth at this stage of his career. The Cubs are presumably going to role with intriguing prospect Pedro Ramírez in a versatile utility role off the bench.
  • CHC 2nd Baseman #12
The 31-year-old infielder will join the Cubs’ active roster after being acquired from the Rockies on Thursday. He’ll primarily serve as a defensive replacement and pinch-runner, the role that Scott Kingery had prior to making a couple of errors during Thursday’s contest and being optioned to Triple-A Iowa. He can be ignored for fantasy purposes.
  • CHC 2nd Baseman #12
The 31-year-old infielder had been playing at Triple-A Albuquerque where he was slashing a solid .333/.387/.519 with a homer, eight RBI and a pair of stolen bases in 62 plate appearances. It’s unclear if the Cubs plan to promote him immediately to the big league roster or if he’ll report to Triple-A Iowa.

Brice Turang delivered a two-run single in the seventh inning Monday in the Brewers’ 4-3 win over the Cardinals.

The Brewers got all of their runs in the seventh. David Hamilton doubled in the first two runs, and Turang then gave Milwaukee a 4-3 lead that held up the rest of the game. Turang has played about as well as any second baseman in the majors this season, but he was left off the NL All-Star team in favor of Ozzie Albies and Luis Arraez. Turang slumped some in June, but he’s hit .366 with a homer, four doubles and six RBI in his last nine games, pushing his OPS back up to .817.

Shane Drohan yielded three runs — one earned — in six innings Monday in a win over the Cardinals.

Drohan completed six innings for the second time as a major leaguer, throwing a mere 85 pitches to get his 18 outs. He struck out only two and gave up 13 hard-hit balls, but he mostly kept the ball on the ground and surrendered just four singles and two doubles. He’ll face the Pirates on Saturday to finish the first half.

Trevor Megill protected a one-run lead in the ninth for his 14th save Monday against the Cardinals.

Megill has earned saves on back-to-back days. He’ll likely now get Tuesday off. Abner Uribe didn’t work tonight, so he should close if an opportunity arises then.

Dustin May was lifted after striking out seven in 4 2/3 scoreless innings Monday against the Brewers.

The Cardinals said May was on a pitch count of 65 tonight after leaving his last start with an ankle contusion, but they let him throw 81 to try to get the win. They finally pulled him with a 2-0 lead after back-to-back singles with two outs. The Brewers went on to score four runs in the seventh anyway, so it probably wouldn’t have mattered had May gotten through five. It was still a really nice outing after a couple of misfires. He’s allowed zero, zero, six, five and zero runs in his last five starts. He’ll next face the Braves on Saturday.

Blaze Jordan went 0-for-3 before being lifted for a pinch-hitter Monday against the Brewers.

Jordan went 3-for-5 on Friday, only to sit the next two days anyway. The Cardinals obviously aren’t in love with his defense at the hot corner, and José Fermín made his third straight start there tonight with Jordan giving Alec Burleson a day off at first base. The good news for Jordan is that Nolan Gorman is hitting even worse in Triple-A than he did in the majors. Still, that doesn’t really assure Jordan much if the Cardinals don’t want to use him at third.

Juan Soto hit a go-ahead homer in the ninth as the Mets edged the Braves 7-6 in 10 innings on Monday.

Soto’s three-run homer off Raisel Iglesias gave the Mets a 5-3 lead that failed to hold up initially, as Matt Olson responded with a two-run shot in the bottom of the inning. However, the Mets did prevail in 10, with Luis Torrens connecting on a go-ahead double off the bench. Soto had three walks to go along with his 19th homer tonight. He also collected his seventh steal.

Freddy Peralta yielded three runs — one earned — in 4 2/3 innings Monday against the Braves.

He struck out six. Peralta’s fastball velocity was again up some tonight, as he averaged 95.1 mph. It’s his third straight start at 95 mph or better after averaging 93.9 mph previously this season. Interestingly, he’s throwing his secondary pitches a little slower than usual during the same timeframe. If it’s a conscious change, it’s not really paying off yet. He’ll take a 4.68 ERA into his first-half finale against Boston.

Devin Williams took his second blown save of the year after giving up two runs in the ninth Monday against the Braves.

It was mostly just job well done by the Braves. Ozzie Albies hit a double on a changeup low and out of the zone, and Matt Olsen followed by taking a 95-mph fastball up in the zone out the other way to left. The homer was the third allowed by Williams this season. He’ll certainly be down on Tuesday after throwing 52 pitches the last two days. Unless the Mets want to use Luke Weaver for a third straight day, Huascar Brazobán could close.

Luke Weaver got a save against the Braves on Monday after allowing only the automatic runner to score in the 10th.

Working with a two-run lead, Weaver gave up an RBI double to Michael Harris II with one out. He then struck out Ozzie Albies, intentionally walked Matt Olson, walked Jorge Mateo to load the bases and got Mauricio Dubón to ground out to end it. With the Mets currently 15 games under .500, Weaver has already been a popular name on the rumor mill. The save was his first of the year, but he has a 1.89 ERA in spite of a shaky April.

Reynaldo López worked five innings and allowed one run for a second straight start Monday in a no-decision against the Mets.

López allowed three hits, walked two and struck out five. A Carson Benge homer accounted for the damage. He’s shown enough since returning to the rotation to reemerge as an option in deeper mixed leagues. His 21 percent strikeout rate and 10 percent walk rate are still quite a bit weaker than his marks from his successful 2024, when he came in at 27 and eight percent, respectively. López will face the Cardinals next.
