Orioles optioned LHP Josh Walker to Triple-A Norfolk

Walker was just recalled from the minors on Monday and pitched in back-to-back games, allowing one run on two hits in two innings. The Orioles will make a move to bring up a fresh arm for the bullpen.
Can anyone stop the Dodgers in the NL?
Trysta Krick and Vaughn Dalzell discuss whether any National League team can challenge the Dodgers, breaking down the Brewers, Braves, and other top NL contenders.

Walker rejoins Baltimore’s bullpen mix for Monday’s series opener against the White Sox with fellow southpaw Keegan Akin hitting the shelf with an elbow issue. The 31-year-old has made three relief appearances for the Orioles this season.

The demotion comes as a bit of a surprise as Walker has pitched well in his limited action for the Orioles, hurling three scoreless innings with a 0.67 WHIP and a 4/1 K/BB ratio. He should get another opportunity with the big league club in relatively short order.
  • BAL Relief Pitcher #61
Walker gets the call to join Baltimore’s relief corps after spending a couple weeks in the minors. He was in camp as a non-roster invitee this spring. The well-traveled 31-year-old has made 27 appearances in the big leagues since 2023. He got into three contests for the Blue Jays last year before bouncing around between several other organizations.

The latest cutdown from Orioles camp reduces their flock to 53 players. Noda is the most prominent inclusion based on his big-league experience while Walker was the one with the most likely path to a spot on Baltimore’s season-opening roster as a left-handed relief option.
  • BAL Relief Pitcher #21
Walker passed through waivers earlier this week after being designated for assignment back in late December. The 31-year-old southpaw has bounced around between the Braves and Orioles over the past couple months but it appears he’ll enter spring training as part of Baltimore’s relief mix now that the dust has settled.
  • BAL Relief Pitcher #21
The 31-year-old southpaw was just claimed off of waivers from the Braves last week, but he’ll get the boot from the O’s 40-man roster after Friday’s acquisition of Shane Baz. It’s possible that Walker could sneak through waivers this time around and continue to function as extra bullpen depth for the Orioles.
  • BAL Relief Pitcher #21
The Orioles are reclaiming Walker four weeks after losing him to the Braves on waivers. Odds are that he’ll go right back on waivers later this month, but maybe he’ll clear next time around. The Orioles like him enough to want him around to contend for a bullpen spot, just not enough to permanently use an offseason roster spot on him.
  • ATL Relief Pitcher #21
Walker is removed from the 40-man roster to make room for a pair of new roster additions for Atlanta via waivers. The 31-year-old was just claimed off waivers from Baltimore last month, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if another club grabs him. If not, Walker will be eligible to elect free agency if he so chooses.
  • ATL Relief Pitcher #21
The Orioles thought giving Walker a guaranteed one-year contract last week would help him clear waivers, but the Braves decided they’d take it on. Walker, 30, has a 6.59 ERA in 27 1/3 major league innings since debuting in 2023. He never pitched in the majors for the Orioles, who claimed him off waivers from the Phillies in August. That he’s out of options makes him less valuable as a fringe bullpen option.
  • BAL Relief Pitcher #21
Baltimore agreed to a new deal with Walker earlier this week seemingly in anticipation of this exact scenario where they needed to remove him from their 40-man roster. The club is hoping the new deal with prevent another club from picking him up off waivers but that’s hardly a guarantee.

ESPN’s Jesse Rogers believes Giants LHP Robbie Ray will be traded.

Ray, who will be a free agent after the season, has a 3.38 ERA in 18 starts with the Giants this year, though he has walked 52 batters in 106 2/3 innings pitched. Rogers believes Ray is “the more important player” available between Ray and Luis Arraez, implying Ray would get the Giants a better return. It certainly would make little sense for the Giants to hold on to Ray barring an extension. The 34-year-old could be the best starter available at the deadline if the Tigers opt to keep Tarik Skubal.

Braves sent Ronald Acuña Jr. (hamstring) on a rehab assignment to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Over the All-Star break, Acuña had been playing in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League. Acuña hit a grand slam yesterday for the FCL Braves. Today he’ll be bumped up to Gwinnett, meaning he’s probably in line to return to the bigs in the next couple of days.

Red Sox manager Chad Tracy said Connelly Early (elbow) resumed throwing.

Early had gone for a second opinion on his elbow injury, but it appears that the Red Sox and Early are happy with what they saw. Early has missed about three weeks since being placed on the injured list on July 1 and may require a rehab assignment before he’s ready to return. It’s still great news for the Red Sox that they avoided a major injury here.

Red Sox manager Chad Tracy said Ranger Suarez (groin) may be ready to be activated off the injured list on Tuesday.

Suarez was placed on the Il with a groin strain on July 9, threw over the break, and is scheduled to throw again today. It sounds like everything is trending well for him to get the ball again in Boston’s next series against the Orioles.

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Gavin Lux (shoulder) has had his injury rehab paused.

Lux needed an injection recently, so it’s likely that his shoulder is still bothering him. Lux hasn’t yet played in the majors in 2026 and had been hitting just .223/.387/.298 in 119 plate appearances during his rehab assignment to Triple-A Durham. It’s the second time this season Lux has been pulled off a rehab assignment.

Ben Joyce (shoulder) averaged 100.2 mph on his four-seam fastball in his rehab appearance in the Arizona Complex League on Thursday.

Joyce had shoulder surgery last year and seemed on track to return to the Angels’ bullpen in May, but he suffered a setback in the middle of that month. He began throwing again at the end of June and has now begun his rehab assignment in earnest. We don’t know much about how he looked on Thursday, but he did hit 102.3 mph on the radar gun, which seems to suggest that his arm is feeling good. He will head out to an affiliate soon, and we can get more information on his rehab performances.

Aaron Bummer opted out of his deal with the Cubs and is now a free agent.

Bummer had allowed four runs on six hits in four innings at Triple-A Iowa with a 3/2 K/BB ratio. He also had a 7.63 ERA in 15 1/3 innings with the Braves earlier this season. He will try to find a minor league contract on a less competitive team and see if he can break back into the big leagues.

MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reports that Jacob Misiorowski “is likely to return to the starting rotation during the July 20-22 series versus the Mets.”

Misiorowski had his final start before the All-Star break skipped due to fatigue, and then was not in the rotation announced this weekend. The Brewers have said they will get creative with Misiorowski’s usage down the stretch because he is already at 111 innings this season. He did throw 129 innings between the Majors and minors last year, so we’d expect the Brewers to be comfortable with him getting to at least 140 during the regular season, if not more, so that’s plenty of time for him to positively impact fantasy teams. He may just have a start pushed back here and there to make sure he’s fresh for the postseason.

Junior Caminero (hand) is starting at third base and batting third in Game 1 against the Red Sox on Friday.

There was some concern that Caminero might need to take a couple of games off after getting hit in the left hand by a pitch during the All-Star Game on Tuesday. However, the 23-year-old had his X-rays come back clean, and he’s right back in the lineup with the second half underway.

Romy Gonzalez is starting at first base and batting sixth during Game 1 of the doubleheader against the Rays on Friday.

This will be the fifth and final game that Willson Contreras is suspended for. When Contreras returns, Gonzalez will likely play more DH at second base, but he should remain in the lineup. He’s hitting .231/.302/.385 in 11 games since returning from offseason shoulder surgery.
