Brenton Doyle (oblique) continues rehab assignment

Doyle has been on the shelf since late May recovering from an oblique issue while Beck hit the injured list with a left hamstring strain back in mid-May. The pair, who have been complete non-factors from a fantasy perspective this season, figure to make it back to Colorado’s crowded outfield mix by the end of June.

Doyle suffered the injury while attempting to make a diving play in center field during Tuesday’s contest against the Rangers. They attempted to take it day-to-day, but since he wasn’t improving quickly enough it made sense to sit him down for a bit and make sure that he heals properly. Chad Stevens was promoted from Triple-A Albuquerque to take his place on the Rockies’ active roster.

Doyle is day-to-day with a left side contusion that he suffered during Tuesday’s contest while attempting to make a diving play in center field. It doesn’t sound like a potential injured list situation.

Doyle appeared to be shaken up after diving to attempt to take a double away from Ezequiel Duran in the first inning. He was replaced by Tyler Freeman with Jake McCarthy moving over the center field. There should be an update on his status following the game.

Doyle has been on the short side of a platoon of late, starting against just one right-handed starter in the last two weeks. He was in the lineup Saturday against left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez, batting second. He collected two hits, including a double, and crossed home plate twice to score two of the team’s four runs. The 28-year-old outfielder is hitting .204/.271/.269 with one homer, 19 runs scored, three RBI, and eight steals across 118 plate appearances.

Doyle plays against all lefties but shares center field with Jake McCarthy against right-handers. Thursday’s theft was his seventh of the year. Doyle is base-stealing at a more aggressive clip than in 2024, when he swiped 30 bags. It’ll be hard to replicate that 23/30 campaign without regular playing time, however. His batting line has also failed to live up to the .260 average and .186 ISO he posted that year.

Castro has missed the last four games with a knee injury, but he’ll be back in the lineup at second base and hitting fifth on Wednesday. Since a left-hander pitcher is on the mound, Edouard Julien will shift to the bench, as will Troy Johnston and Jake McCarthy, with Jordan Beck and Brenton Doyle in the lineup and batting first and second, respectively.

It appears to be just a routine day off for the versatile 26-year-old. Julien has established himself as the Rockies’ regular leadoff hitter against right-handed pitching in recent weeks, making him a worthwhile addition in deeper mixed leagues. Mickey Moniak will serve as the designated hitter and bat leadoff for the Rockies while Brenton Doyle makes a rare start against a right-hander and will start in center field and bat ninth for the Rockies against Freddy Peralta and the Mets.

Off to a poor start, Doyle has been just a part-timer lately, starting seven of the Rockies’ last 11 games. Still, his exit velocity numbers are a little better than usual, and while his 36-percent strikeout rate is a big problem, his contact numbers are about the same as when he fanned 25-26 percent of the time the last two years. Especially once the weather heats up and Coors Field becomes a bigger factor, he still has a chance to be pretty interesting in mixed leagues, if he resumes playing regularly.

Doyle opened the scoring in the contest as he crushed a 1-0 sinker from Randy Vásquez for a 408-foot (104.7 mph EV) solo shot in the third inning. He also singled with one out in the fifth inning but never advanced past first base. Doyle also worked a walk in the 10th inning. He struggled in the game’s biggest spot though — with a man on third and one out in the 12th inning — grounding into a fielder’s choice that had the lead run cut down at the plate. The 27-year-old outfielder is off to a very slow start at the plate this season, slashing just .175/.250/.275 while Thursday’s home run was his first RBI on the year.
