Nationals recalled RHP Cole Henry from Triple-A Rochester

Henry has a 6.00 ERA, 1.67 WHIP, and a 13/6 K/BB ratio over 12 innings in 10 appearances with the Nationals this season. He will be limited to low-leverage innings.

Henry was shipped back to the minors after throwing 44 pitches in relief against the Astros on Monday night. The Nationals will make a corresponding move to bring up a fresh bullpen arm prior to Tuesday’s contest.

Henry threw 36 pitches over two innings on Friday night and may not have been available for multiple innings on Sunday if needed, so the Nationals promoted Riley Cornelio to take his place on Sunday. Henry, 26, holds a disappointing 6.00 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and a 13/6 K/BB ratio over 12 innings in 10 appearances with the Nats this season.

Henry provides Washington with some additional bullpen depth heading into Friday’s series opener against the Padres. The 26-year-old reliever is back after missing nearly seven weeks recovering from a rotator cuff strain. He made seven appearances for the Nationals prior to hitting the injured list last month.

That unaggressive placement would seem to signal that Henry is a ways from rejoining the club. He should be around at some point in June or July, but there’s not much to speculate on here at the moment and he doesn’t need to be rostered while on IL in the vast majority of leagues.
  • WSH Relief Pitcher #99
Henry had a rough start to the season, and perhaps this explains it. No word yet on how long the 26-year-old will be out, but a rotator cuff strain is never great news for a pitcher.

Clayton Beeter was off today after working the previous two days. Cole Henry seemed like he might be the primary fallback, but he came in mid-batter in the seventh today after a Ken Waldichuk injury and finished off a walk to Brice Turang before walking William Contreras and giving up a homer to Gary Sánchez. So, that won’t help his stock. The interesting thing there is that he was allowed to be removed after the homer, even though he officially faced just two batters; the initial walk was credited to Waldichuk yet still counted as far as the three-batter rule for Henry. PJ Poulin got four outs after replacing Henry, and Varland did a fine job in retiring Joey Ortiz, Turang and Contreras. Varland, who has allowed three runs in five innings, probably will be a factor in the ninth for the Nationals if Beeter struggles or gets hurt.

The Nationals tried to piece things together in the ninth today. Clayton Beeter stranded two runners after coming in with one out in the eighth. He went on to retire Justin Crawford to start the ninth, but he was pulled in favor of lefty PJ Poulin after Trea Turner singled. Poulin walked Kyle Schwarber, got Bryce Harper to pop out and then walked Alec Bohm before being lifted in favor of Henry, who probably would have pitched to Bohm if not for the three-batter rule. Henry gave up a two-run single to Edmundo Sosa, tying the game at 5-5, before walking Adolis García and retiring Brandon Marsh. Henry then remained in for the 10th after the Nationals failed to score in the top of the inning and took the loss after giving up singles to both batters he faced. Based on today’s results, Beeter’s stock should be up a little in comparison to Henry’s. Still, those two might go back and forth a few times. Plus, Henry wasn’t actually charged with an earned run today, while Beeter was.

Henry ended up not pitching Thursday after the Nationals upped their lead to six runs in the ninth. At this point, the Nationals likely just wanted to get him some work, and he had an easy 11-pitch inning against the Cubs, striking out one. That should keep him available to pitch Sunday, and we’ll again have to wait and see what the Nationals do if they have a late lead.

It looks like the Nationals were setting things up for Cole Henry to get the save chance today, though he went unused in the bottom of the ninth after the team upped its lead from four runs to six runs in the top of the inning. It’s just a tiny bit of a surprise, as it looked like Beeter might have the edge over Henry at the end of the spring. Still, this is situation that figures to continue evolving over the course of the season, and because the Nationals still figure to be pretty bad, neither Beeter nor Henry seems like a must-roster guy right now.

Teams typically use their better relievers early in games in spring training, but it seemed like manager Blake Butera wanted Beeter to have the chance to close this one out. It didn’t happen — the Nationals were shut out — but it’s the thought that counts. Beeter and Cole Henry, who worked a scoreless second today, seem like the favorite for saves in D.C. There probably won’t be a bunch to go around, though.

Nationals transferred RHP Jake Irvin (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.

He was likely a few weeks from making it back to the bigs anyway after just facing hitters for the first time on Wednesday, so the transfer won’t materially impact his timeline. Irvin is returning from a right shoulder strain. The move frees up a 40-man roster spot for Tom Cosgrove.

Royals recalled RHP Eli Morgan from Triple-A Omaha.

Morgan had a 5.19 ERA in 14 games before being sent down in mid-June. The 30-year-old veteran had a 1.42 ERA in 19 innings while striking out 31 for the Storm Chasers. He’ll be low-leverage depth over the weekend before the All-Star break hits.

Royals optioned RHP Jose Cuas to Triple-A Omaha.

Cuas pitched in five games with the Royals in this latest stint, and he now carries a 2.84 ERA, nine strikeouts, one walk and eight hits allowed in 6 1/3 innings pitched. He did allow some inherited runners to score, we suppose, but we’re mildly surprised the Royals aren’t interested in seeing more. After 32 pitches over the past two days, he heads back to the Storm Chasers.

Royals optioned CF Kameron Misner to Triple-A Omaha.

Misner saw only sporadic playing time in the bigs, hitting .220/.256/.244 against mostly left-handed pitchers. He’ll head back to the Storm Chasers as outfield depth.

Royals activated 1B Vinnie Pasquantino from the 10-day injured list.

Yet another hamate bone fracture returner today, Pasquantino hit a disappointing .224/.309/.350 before heading to the injured list in mid-June. It’s a surprisingly quick return for Pasquantino, but he figures to reassume everyday duties and push Jac Caglianone back to the outfield. Pasquantino is a worthwhile add in leagues where he was dropped, but his expected stats were all rough before the injury, so he shouldn’t exactly be seen as a must-play option.

Pirates optioned RHP Hunter Stratton to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Stratton threw 46 pitches over the last three days against the Braves — the team he was acquired from in June — allowing two earned runs in 2 1/3 innings pitched while striking out three. He’ll likely be back on the shuttle from Indianapolis once he’s rested, but the Pirates opted for a fresh arm this weekend.

Pirates optioned RHP Cam Sanders to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Sanders gave up three runs yesterday while throwing 39 pitches, so he was sent down for a fresh arm. The 29-year-old carries an 8.68 ERA in nine games for the Pirates this year, walking ten batters while striking out 13 over 9 1/3 innings pitched.

Kyle Schwarber will participate in the 2026 Home Run Derby.

He’s the second Phillies player to join the field in the last two days, as he and Bryce Harper are joining Willson Contreras, Jac Caglianone, Junior Caminero, and Ben Rice. There’s room for one more player. Schwarber led the league in homers last year (56) and currently is leading MLB again this year with 32 while hitting .254/.369/.571. The 33-year-old star will undoubtedly be one the favorites to win the derby.

Twins activated C Ryan Jeffers off the 10-day injured list.

Jeffers should slot right back into the main catching role for the Twins and be an acceptable catcher off the bat in 12-team leagues. It’s worth noting that hamate injuries often sap power going forward, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Jeffers lost a few points off his slugging percentage going forward. Still, he’s been a good enough hitter that the Twins will be thrilled to play him again.

Reds placed 2B Matt McLain on the 10-day injured list retroactive to July 8, 2026 with a left calf strain.

McLain’s calf injury helps the Reds activate Ke’Bryan Hayes. McLain was day-to-day with the calf as of last night. McLain has hit a disappointing .190/.293/.328 in 309 plate appearances this year, though he has provided 11 stolen bases and eight homers along the way. Managers in deeper leagues can probably cut bait at this point if they have better options on the wire.
