Mets designate dSeelinger for assignment

Seelinger will stick around as organizational depth for the Mets after getting crushed for seven runs over two innings by the Royals in his big-league debut earlier this week.

Seelinger was just acquired Monday in a trade with the Tigers after forging a 3.89 ERA and 49/19 K/BB over 39 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level. He’ll get a chance to help the bullpen with Guillo Zuñiga designated for assignment to make room.

Seelinger has a 3.89 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, and 49/19 K/BB ratio in 39 1/3 innings at Triple-A this season. The 31-year-old can miss bats, but he’s also posted a walk rate over 11 percent in back-to-back seasons at Triple-A. He’s just organizational depth for a depleted Mets pitching staff.

Briceño is one of the top prospects in the Tigers’ system, but he will be sidelined for a few months after wrist surgery. Malgeri made it as high as Double-A last year, while Seelinger had a solid season, posting a 2.74 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 75/25 K/BB ratio in 65 2/3 innings out of the bullpen at Double-A and Triple-A.

Seelinger, 30, did a nice job in a minor league role for the Tigers in 2025, compiling a 2.74 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and a 75/25 K/BB ratio across 65 2/3 frames between Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo. He has still yet to make his big league debut after toiling in the minor leagues for eight seasons, but that breakthrough could finally come if he continues to dominate at the Triple-A level in 2026.

Seelinger was a notable relief prospect a couple seasons ago, and was even picked up by the Phillies back in 2021 during the minor league portion of the Rule 5 Draft. The 29-year-old righty spent the first couple months of the year dominating the independent Atlantic League with the Long Island Ducks, recording 11 saves to accompany a sublime 0.44 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 31/8 K/BB ratio across 20 2/3 innings (21 appearances). He’ll get another shot in affiliated ball with the Tigers and it wouldn’t be shocking to see him ascend to the majors at some point down the road.

Seelinger, a former 28th-round pick of the Pirates, registered a promising 3.07 ERA with 64 strikeouts over 41 innings of relief this past summer at Double-A Richmond. The 26-year-old could maybe find his way to the majors in Philly.

Seelinger had allowed 10 earned runs over nine innings of relief this season with High-A Charlotte. The 24-year-old former 28th-round pick of the Pirates will be stationed at Low-A Augusta in the Giants’ system.

Seelinger, 23, holds a 3.03 ERA and 52/11 K/BB ratio over 32 2/3 innings this season at he Low-A level. He was not ranked by MLB.com among the Pirates’ top 30 prospects.
