Logan Gilbert allowed four runs with five strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings in a loss against the Rays on Saturday.

Gilbert tossed a scoreless first inning, then gave up a run on a single and a double in the second. Back-to-back doubles to start the third brought a second run in for the Rays in the third inning. Gilbert, pitching into the seventh, gave up a double and a walk before leaving at 96 pitches with two outs in the frame. Both inherited runners would come in to score. The 29-year-old right-hander ends the first half with a 3.32 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and a 119/24 K/BB ratio across 114 innings.
AL champions futures is an 'absolute mess'
Drew Dinsick and Vaughn Dalzell take a look at the New York Yankees, Seattle Mariners and Tampa Bay Rays' chances to win the AL Championship. The Yankees look to become the favorite with the return of Aaron Judge.

Gilbert retired 22 of 23 batters, and Cole Wilcox was a perfect 5-for-5 after coming on in an 11-0 game. Gilbert, originally due to piggyback with Emerson Hancock today, seemed pleased to have the start entirely to himself. His velocity was again up; he’s come in at 96.8, 97.1 and 97.0 mph with his fastball in his last three starts after averaging 95.5 mph in his first 15 outings. He got 18 whiffs today, including 12 with the fastball, and he allowed just three hard-hit balls. The win makes him 7-5 with a 3.19 ERA. He’s fourth in the majors with a 0.95 WHIP and tied for 12th with 114 strikeouts. He’ll get the Rays in his final start before the break.

To the surprise of absolutely nobody, the Mariners are abandoning their ill-fated piggyback experiment with Gilbert making his usual start before Emerson Hancock takes the ball against Toronto on Sunday. It doesn’t sound like the organization has any plans to continue the unorthodox arrangement beyond the All-Star break, especially with the trade deadline looming and top prospects like Kade Anderson and Ryan Sloan looking like they could pitch in the majors down the home stretch. Hopefully this is the last time fantasy managers need to incorporate the phrase piggyback into our vocabulary.

It sounds like the Mariners will continue with this odd piggybacking arrangement through the All-Star break to keep all six of their starters happy. That means George Kirby will start on Sunday with Bryan Woo set to take the ball for Tuesday’s series opener against the Marlins in Miami.

Gilbert gave up seven hits, walked none and struck out seven. He fell to 6-5 with the loss. Gilbert was victimized by the Guardians in a three-run third inning. The 29-year-old right-hander allowed a base hit to four of the first five hitters in the inning. Cleveland would tack on another run in the fifth inning against Gilbert and that was enough to give the Guardians the win. His ERA is 3.42. Gilbert is lined up to face the Blue Jays at home next weekend.

We need to come up with a better term than piggybacking. Seriously. Gilbert takes the ball for a traditional start with Hancock doing the same for Sunday’s series finale. The decision pushes George Kirby back to Monday’s opener against the Angels. The whole Mariners rotation situation is challenging to understand and remains a massive headache for fantasy managers. There have to be some changes coming from a personnel standpoint after next month’s All-Star break because this seems too chaotic to work as a strategic approach for an extended period.
  • SEA Starting Pitcher #36
Gilbert has been outstanding as of late, while Hancock has scuffled over his past two outings. The Mariners will be rotating hurlers in their piggyback situation rather than going to a six-man rotation for the foreseeable future, and it’s less than ideal from a fantasy perspective.

Gilbert posted 18 whiffs on the day, which was more than any other starting pitcher on Sunday. He struck out eight and walked two while throwing 70 percent of his pitches for strikes. He had good command of everything but the slider today, and the slider was still able to post a solid 13 percent swinging strike rate. The curve and splitter missed plenty of bats in limited usage, and his four-seam fastball was up over one mph, averaging 96.8 mph. He’ll look to keep it going against the Guardians next week.

Gilbert surrendered a run on two hits in the first inning. He then settled in nicely, dominating over six more shutout frames while collecting a season-high ten strikeouts on an impressive 19 whiffs. The 29-year-old right-hander will take a 3.43 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and a 92/20 K/BB ratio across 86 2/3 innings into a start against the Red Sox in Seattle on Sunday.

There’s a lot to unpack here. According to Mariners general manager Justin Hollander, it was a unanimous decision by all six starters — Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Bryan Woo, Emerson Hancock, Bryce Miller and Luis Castillo — to move to a schedule where each pitcher will rotate through and have piggyback days. Ironically, the arrangement will begin with Castillo piggybacking out of the bullpen with Miller during Friday’s series opener against the Red Sox. The decision will have a significant fantasy impact simply by reducing the overall volume for each starter over the next few weeks. The unorthodox arrangement feels like a temporary stopgap solution until the arrival of top prospects Kade Anderson and Ryan Sloan later this summer ultimately forces Seattle to move on from at least one of their veteran arms.

It wasn’t enough to get Gilbert a win, so he remains 4-4 with a 3.62 ERA, even though the Mariners prevailed in one of his starts for the eighth time this year. Gilbert will face the Orioles again next week, but this time, it will be home in Seattle, improving his chances of recoding a victory.

Sandy Alcantara will start Friday’s game against the Brewers.

The Marlins will open the second half with Alcantara on Friday, Max Meyer on Saturday, and Eury Pérez on Sunday. No major surprises here as these are the three main starters for the Marlins. All three of them are worthy starters in 12-team leagues coming out of the break.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he has “no idea when” Will Smith (neck) will return.

Same. Roberts lead with saying he expects Smith back this year, but this is not exactly a ringing endorsement that it will be any time soon. Smith has been swinging, but The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya describes his recovery as “stagnant.” Dalton Rushing figures to remain the Dodgers’ main catcher going forward and should be rostered in most leagues at this point.

Tyler Glasnow (back) threw a bullpen session last weekend.

He’s progressing slowly, per The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya, and is trying to clear each step without his back flaring up. Glasnow looks likely to be out for quite a bit longer given how slow he’s been to start throwing. An August return is probably on the table, but it might be mid-to-late August at this point.

The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya reports Enrique Hernández (oblique) will start a rehab assignment and could be active by July 28.

Hernández only played a game and change after coming off the injured list in late May from a surgically repaired elbow. The versatile utility man figures to have little fantasy value, but will be a boost for the Dodgers if he can get back on the field.

Logan Henderson will start Friday’s game against the Marlins.

The Brewers will lead off the second half of the season with Henderson on Friday, Shane Drohan on Saturday, and Robert Gasser on Sunday against the Marlins. Henderson was 3-1 with a 3.13 ERA and 0.99 WHIP over the first half while missing some time due to a back strain. He’ll make for a nice 12-team starter on Friday.

Jake Bennett will start Friday for the Red Sox against the Rays.

He’ll head up the first game of a double-header. The Red Sox don’t have a declared starter for Game 2 of the doubleheader yet, but Patrick Sandoval and Sonny Gray will follow on Saturday and Sunday. Bennett finished the first half 4-3 with a 2.64 ERA in 47 2/3 innings while striking out 35. The Rays aren’t an easy matchup, but we can understand giving Bennett a chance in mixed leagues.

Independent reporter Francys Romero reports the Marlins have signed first-round pick SS Jacob Lombard to a deal with a $5 million signing bonus.

Lombard, the brother of George Lombard Jr., will immediately profile as one of the Marlins’ top prospects after unexpectedly sliding to their slot with the 14th overall pick in last Saturday’s draft. He does carry some swing-and-miss risk, but is one of the best athletes in the class and should be on the dynasty radar immediately.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports the Reds have agreed to a seven-year, $105 million contract with Chase Burns.

Burns has been absolutely electric in opening up the season 11-1 with a 2.54 ERA while striking out 118 in 102 2/3 innings before the All-Star Break. Opponents are hitting .223 against his fastball and .154 against his slider, which has been Burns’ main putaway pitch so far this year. It’s hard to forecast seven years out for any pitcher, but if a smaller market team is to invest in one for the long term, it’s hard to do much better than Burns.

Gage Jump will start Friday’s game against the Nationals.

The A’s will set their rotation to start the second half as Jump on Friday, J.T. Ginn on Saturday, and Jacob Lopez on Sunday in their three-game set against the Nationals. Jump, 3-4 with a 3.51 ERA, struggled a bit towards the beginning of July but bounced back against the White Sox. He’s definitely a viable mixed-league starter when he’s not pitching at home.

The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner and Brendan Kuty believe George Lombard Jr. could play shortstop for the Yankees “well before the calendar turns to September and rosters expand.”

They condition this with the idea that he’ll need to show his injured fingers are fine and he’ll need to keep producing for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre when he returns. But in their eyes, the Yankees have no confidence in Anthony Volpe or José Caballero at this point. They also quote Yankees GM Brian Cashman as saying that Lombard “might be a choice at some point.”
