Peter Lambert allowed one run in six innings and got the win in the Astros’ 9-3 victory over the Rangers on Saturday.

Lambert gave up three hits, walked one and struck out seven. He improved to 8-5 with the win. Lambert has won six of his last seven decision. He was excellent against the Rangers on Saturday, lowering his ERA to 3.14 heading into the All-Star break.

Lambert leaned on his fastball for a dominant start here. He located it well at the letters all night and the Orioles hitters couldn’t help but swing under it. In all, it forced nine of his 14 total swings-and-misses and seven called strikes as well. That helped the pitch turn in an elite 77% strike rate. From there, he mixed his bevy of secondaries to keep the Orioles. His three walks were a blemish on his ledger and came in three consecutive plate appearances which forced home the only run he allowed. He’s become a breakout star this season with a 3.03 ERA, 91 strikeouts, and 36 walks through 92 innings as a steadying force in the Astros’ otherwise chaotic rotation. He’s scheduled to face the Marlins at home next time out.

The 29-year-old right-hander had a terrific first half for the Astros, compiling a 3.14 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and an 81/33 K/BB ratio across 86 innings through his first 15 starts. At this stage, he should be considered a viable weekly option in all mixed leagues. Spencer Arrighetti will follow him on Saturday with Hunter Brown getting the ball in Sunday’s series finale in Houston.

Lambert threw 60-of-90 pitches for strikes, and he struck out six against one walk while allowing just three hits. The right-hander scuffled a bit in his previous outing against the Twins, but for the most part, he’s been a solid — and surprising — helper for the Houston rotation as seen in his 7-5 record and 3.26 ERA. He’ll make his final start before the All-Star break against the Rangers on the road.

Lambert gave up five hits, walked three and struck out four. He fell to 6-5 with the loss. All four of the runs Lambert allowed came on home runs. Royce Lewis and Victor Caratini hit solo shots in the fourth inning before Josh Bell hit a two-run shot in the sixth inning. Lambert has a 3.51 ERA, but can struggle at times given the amount of fastballs he throws. He’s lined up to face the Nationals on the road next week.

Lambert allowed two runs on a Daulton Varsho double and a Luis Urías homer in the fourth. In the fifth, he retired two out of three batters, but the Astros wouldn’t let him face Varsho again. Varsho doubled off Steven Okert anyway, but it didn’t score the runner from first and Urías then struck out. As it turned out, Lambert probably wouldn’t have gotten the win even if he had finished the fifth, as the Jays came back to tie things up off Enyel De Los Santos in the seventh and took the lead in the eighth. It’s just the second time this season that Lambert hasn’t completed five innings, and he’s still 4-0 with a 2.97 ERA in his last six starts. He’s in line to make his next start Sunday in Detroit, but he could be pushed back to Monday against the Twins if Cristian Javier is activated.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #20
Lambert only gave up two hits on the afternoon, lowering his ERA to 3.23. The righty has been sensational for the Astros as he’s one of two pitchers to make more than three starts for them with an ERA under 5.75. The other is Spencer Arrighetti. Lambert’s ERA estimators suggest he has pitched a bit over his head so far, but he’ll remain in strong fantasy consideration next time out in Toronto.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #20
Lambert left in the seventh after taking a comebacker off his pitching wrist, but he said afterwards that he was fine. The only runs he allowed tonight came on homers off the bat of Mike Trout and Logan O’Hoppe. It went as his first no decision after he opened the year 5-4 with a 3.55 ERA in nine starts. That he’s been so tough to homer against has been the biggest key to his nice run, but two tonight brings his total to five homers allowed in 57 innings, and he should be pretty average there going forward. He’ll face the Tigers next week.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #20
Lambert stranded the bases loaded in the second and kept the A’s scoreless until the sixth, when he gave up a Brent Rooker homer, a walk and then a double with one out. Enyel De Los Santos entered and retired Zack Gelof and Jeff McNeil to strand both inherited runners. It went as Lambert’s third straight win, even though he’s walked 11 over 15 1/3 innings during the span. He’s 5-4 with a 3.55 ERA in nine starts overall. The big thing that he has in his corner is that he’s allowed just three homers in 50 2/3 innings, but he’s not a strong groundball pitcher and his walk rate is an increasing concern. Those relying on him in mixed leagues can feel free to use him against the Angels next week, but it’s still not rather likely that he’ll be a long-term solution.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #20
Lambert allowed five hits, walked three and struck out three with his velocity down a tad today. He has a 5.63 ERA and a 14/9 K/BB over 16 innings in his last three starts, though he’s won two of those anyway. He’s still securely in Houston’s rotation, and he’ll likely make his next start Friday at home against the A’s.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #20
Lambert allowed five hits, walked four and struck out five in an erratic outing. He also hit a batter. This makes him 3-4 with a 3.79 ERA through seven starts. That he’s allowed only one homer in 40 1/3 innings has made him a viable fantasy starter to date, but his luck figures to change some there. He’s due to pitch at home against the Brewers next weekend.

Esmerlyn Valdez launched a two-run homer, propelling the Pirates to a 7-1 win over the Guardians in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

The magic continues. Valdez picked up right where he left off prior to the All-Star break, lifting a towering fly ball off Guardians starter Gavin Williams that just kept on carrying into the right-field seats to give Pittsburgh a 4-1 advantage in the sixth inning. The 22-year-old slugging prospect has gone deep a staggering 11 times in just 29 games to open his big-league career. He’s going to cool off at some point in the near future since he’s striking out nearly 40 percent of the time and running a BABIP in the .400 range, but he’s clearly going to keep hitting for power, which should keep him fantasy-relevant until further notice.

Travis Bazzana scalded an RBI triple in the opening contest of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Pirates.

Bazzana supplied Cleveland’s lone run during the front-end of the twin bill when he drilled a 101-mph RBI triple into the right-field corner off Pirates starter Jared Jones with two outs in the third inning. It was his lone hit in four at-bats out of the leadoff spot as the Guardians managed just six hits combined in their second-half lid-lifter.

Jacob Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Guardians.

Gonzalez wasted little time making an impression in Pittsburgh, launching a 428-foot no-doubter off Cleveland starter Gavin Williams into the right-field seats in his first at-bat as a Pirate. The 24-year-old rookie has an opportunity to play everyday as Pittsburgh’s primary shortstop until Konnor Griffin (finger) returns from the injured list in early September after being acquired from the White Sox in a trade last week.

Jared Jones recorded a season-high nine strikeouts and allowed one run over five innings on Saturday against the Guardians.

Jones drew the starting assignment for the front-end of Saturday’s doubleheader at Progressive Field and touched triple digits 11 times during an impressive 74-pitch outing where he leaned almost exclusively on his fastball and slider. The lone run against him came on an RBI triple from Travis Bazzana with two outs in the third inning. The Pirates have been cautious with his workload as he returns from Tommy John surgery, but he’s looked outstanding since the start of July, allowing just two runs while compiling a 23/3 K/BB ratio over 15 innings across his last three starts. He should be rostered in all fantasy leagues at this point based on his strikeout upside alone.

Gavin Williams matched a season-high with 11 strikeouts and allowed five runs over six innings on Saturday in a loss to the Pirates.

Williams notched his fifth double-digit strikeout performance of the season but was burned by the long ball in this one, serving up three homers to a suddenly red-hot Pirates lineup. He managed to shake off an early two-run blast from Jacob Gonzalez before giving up a two-run shot to Esmerlyn Valdez and a solo tater to Nick Gonzalez in the sixth. The result was a bizarre-looking pitching line where he somehow managed to dominate for most of his outing while still ending up being saddled with a loss. He’ll square off against the Twins on Thursday in his next outing.

Connelly Early (elbow) has started a throwing progression.

Early increased his flat-ground throwing distance to 90 feet after playing catch from 75 feet on Friday. The 24-year-old lefty hit the injured list with posterior elbow inflammation back on July 1. He’ll ramp up his throwing progression over the next few weeks and should make it back to Boston’s rotation at some point in the second half.

Brice Turang was scratched from the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Marlins with right foot soreness.

Braden Shewmake takes over at the keystone with Turang taking a seat after fouling a ball off his right foot during Friday’s second-half opener. He’s delivered top-three fantasy value at second base this season, hitting .263/.359/.460 with 66 runs scored, 14 homers, 60 RBI and 15 steals in 421 plate appearances through 92 games. It’s unclear whether there are any plans for him to undergo imaging at this juncture. There should be a more definitive update on his status later this weekend. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now.

Christian Encarnacion-Strand is at third base and hitting eighth on Saturday against the Astros.

Encarnacion-Strand will get a chance to make an impact for the Orioles while Blaze Alexander is sidelined with a fractured left hand. The 26-year-old former prospect has always possessed impressive raw power, but he’s never been able to parlay it into an everyday role at the highest level during his time with the Reds. He’s in a great spot with Camden Yards being an ideal spot for right-handed pop. A wait-and-see approach is preferable here, but he’s the type of hitter that could get hot and make some noise in a hurry.

Michael Soroka (glute) threw a bullpen session on Saturday at Chase Field.

Soroka is working his way back from a left glute strain that put him on the injured list back in late June. The general expectation is that he’ll need at least one minor league rehab start before returning to Arizona’s rotation at some point in August.

Cody Bradford (elbow) will make another minor league rehab start for Double-A Frisco on Saturday.

Bradford tossed one inning last weekend in his first rehab start since early April. The 28-year-old lefty suffered a setback in his rehabilitation from last year’s Tommy John surgery, but appears to be trending towards making it back to the majors at some point in the late stages of the second half.
