Sonny Gray allowed five hits and one run with one walk and three strikeouts over six innings to earn the win in a 6-2 triumph over the Mets on Friday.

Meant to be tired after the Red Sox’s travel woes between Thursday and Friday, Gray lulled the Mets to sleep here. He didn’t have anything close to his best swing-and-miss stuff and only forced two whiffs, but showed great command of his sinker and used it to wriggle out of a few jams with some timely double plays. After this excellent start, he’ll close the first half with a 2.54 ERA, 85 strikeouts, and 24 walks across 95 2/3 innings. That is the lowest ERA by a qualified pitcher that did not make either All-Star team.
White Sox 'aren't going away' in second half
With an impressive first half of the season wrapped up, the White Sox picked up where they left off by taking the series in Toronto as they aim to cement their place atop the AL Central.

The complicating factor here is that the Red Sox may not sell if they turn things around — three wild card teams have been a disincentive for early trades — and they seem to be showing some sparks of life lately. Gray hails from Nashville and would presumably waive his no-trade clause to go to the Braves. It would seem to be a good match, given Atlanta’s banged up rotation, if the Red Sox do sell.

Sonny Gray has a no trade clause and has been really good for a Boston team that is only four games out of the Wild Card in the American League, so he shouldn’t be viewed as a slam dunk trade candidate. In addition to that, as Passan notes, his contract is a potential probably because, in addition to his $10 million salary over the final two months of th eseason, his restructed contract includes a $10 million buyout on a $30 million mutual option for 2027. That leaves “Boston somewhat hamstrung unless it’s willing to pay down a significant portion and convince Gray to accept a deal.”

Gray scattered four hits, with one of those being a solo homer by Josh Lowe. He struck out seven against two walks, and he found the zone on 48-of-70 pitches. It wasn’t quite as good as the no-hit bid he had in his previous outing against New York, but it’s another solid outing that sees Gray lower his ERA to 2.61 with a deserved 10-1 record. We’re just as confused as everyone else how that’s not an All-Star, but he’ll make his final start before the break against the Mets on Friday.

Gray was removed immediately after Amed Rosario’s single up the middle with one out in the eighth. Tyron Guerrero replaced him and got out of the inning from there. It’s the deepest Gray has ever carried a no-no, and his ninth and final strikeout of the night gave him 2,000 for his career. He’s tied with Andy Benes on the all-time list there, having passed Billy Pierce and Kevin Appier tonight. He’s seventh among active pitchers in strikeouts and fifth with 134 victories. He’ll face the Angels next weekend.

Gray was excellent against the Rockies in Coors Field, holding them to one run over seven frames. The lone run came on a solo homer by Willi Castro in the second inning. He scattered five other hits and three walks, limiting damage by punching out 11 batters. The 36-year-old right-hander will take a 2.95 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and a 66/20 K/BB ratio across 76 1/3 innings into a start against the Yankees in Boston on Sunday.

Homers from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the first and Nathan Lukes in the seventh bookended the outing. Gray allowed six hits, walked one and struck out four. It’s his sixth quality start in his last seven tries, though the Red Sox fell to 9-4 in his starts. He’ll face the Rockies in Coors Field next week, but he still seems like a solid enough play. It’ll be just his second career start there; he allowed one run over seven innings and struck out nine while pitching for the Reds there in 2019.

The Rangers put up three hits on Gray in the first inning, with the first run coming around to score on an RBI single by Wyatt Langford. It would be the only run Gray would allow on the night, as the veteran righty locked in to fire five-straight scoreless frames while allowing just two hits and no free passes. Gray has allowed three earned runs or fewer in eight straight starts and has made it through six innings in five of those outings. He remains as reliable an option as any and is scheduled to make his next start on Thursday at home against the Blue Jays.

He was facing the Bombers in Yankee Stadium for the first time since an offseason interview about how much he dislikes his former team. Gray gave up two homers and six other hits while allowing two walks and striking out only three, but he really limited the damage in improving to 7-1 with a 3.20 ERA on the year. A couple of double plays, one on a Paul Goldschmidt grounder and another on an Anthony Volpe liner, helped there. Gray due to face the Rays in St. Pete next week.

The run came right away on back-to-back doubles from Travis Bazzana and José Ramírez to start the first, but it was smooth sailing after that. Gray fanned seven, including six with his sweeper. He’ll take a 3.06 ERA into his next start, which should be a fun one. He’ll pitch in Yankee Stadium for the first time since talking in a December interview about how much he hates the Yankees.

Gray gave up six hits, walked two and struck out four. He threw 75 pitches and was removed after four innings. Danny Coulombe started the fifth inning. Gray struck out nine batters in his last start, flashing the upside he’s had over the course of his career. He hasn’t gone more than six innings in any of his nine starts this year and has thrown 70-80 pitches in each of his last four starts. Gray is lined up to face the Guardians on the road next weekend.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched his first MLB regular-season complete game as the Dodgers bested the Yankees 8-2 in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader.

Yamamoto, who did throw two complete games in the postseason last year, allowed four hits, walked none and struck out seven in a 102-pitch masterpiece. He gave up a homer to Trent Grisham in the fourth. The other run came in the eighth after center fielder Andy Pages lost Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s flyball in the sun for a double, and Anthony Volpe followed with an RBI single. Yamamoto is the first pitcher to throw a complete game against the Yankees since Sandy Alcantara on Aug. 12, 2023. He’ll take a 10-6 record and a 2.78 ERA into his next outing against the Mets.

Cam Schlittler surrendered three runs in 4 1/3 innings to take a loss to the Dodgers in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader.

Schlittler struck out eight and walked none today. He allowed six hits but just four hard-hit balls. Against another lineup, he probably would have delivered a quality start. The Dodgers, though, put three hits together during a two-run third and forced him to run up his pitch count, resulting in the early exit. Schlittler will likely make his next start Friday against the Phillies.

Tommy Edman singled twice, drove in two runs and scored three times against the Yankees in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader.

Edman also had a barrel go for a 366-foot flyout in the eighth. He’s been exceptional since coming off the injured list last month, hitting .351/.429/.486 in 24 games. The Dodgers are currently batting him ninth against right-handers anyway, but he has a case for moving up.

Shohei Ohtani knocked in two runs with a double and a single in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader versus the Yankees.

Ohtani struck out once today, but he delivered hard-hit balls in each of his other four at-bats. His double off Cam Schlittler in the third was hit 111.1 mph. Even though he’s led off all year, Ohtani is tied for 18th in the majors with 60 RBI. He’s tied for fourth with 66 runs scored.

Cody Bellinger went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader against the Dodgers.

Bellinger, the All-Star Game MVP, is 1-for-7 with four strikeouts since play resumed. He has a 15/2 K/BB this month in 15 games, which is very unusual. Even when he was slumping last month, he still struck out a mere 16 times in 25 games. He entered July with a 49/49 K/BB in 83 games this season.

Nationals transferred LHP Richard Lovelady to the 60-day injured list.

Nothing has changed in the recovery timeline for Lovelady, who is shelved indefinitely with a left triceps strain. This move was done as a procedural move to open up a spot on the team’s 40-man roster for the addition of Matt Krook on Sunday.

Nationals placed LHP PJ Poulin on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to July 16, with a left flexor strain.

The 29-year-old southpaw has been a valuable contributor to the Nationals’ bullpen this season, posting a 2.70 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and a 25/21 K/BB ratio across 36 2/3 innings in his 35 appearances. No word yet on how long he’ll be sidelined for.

Nationals re-signed LHP Matt Krook to a one-year contract.

Krook refused an outright assignment to Triple-A Rochester just before the All-Star break and now finds himself getting a spot on the Nationals’ active roster. PJ Poulin (elbow) was placed on the injured list in a corresponding move on Sunday.

Samuel Basallo was removed from Sunday’s contest against the Astros due to right shoulder discomfort.

The 21-year-old backstop suffered the injury on a swing in the second inning and was replaced by Sam Huff when the Orioles took the field in the bottom of the frame. No word yet on the severity of the injury or how long he may be shelved for.
