Bailey Ober will start for the Twins as they open the second half of the season against the Cubs in Chicago on Friday evening.

He’ll be followed by Taj Bradley on Saturday afternoon and Zebby Matthews on Sunday afternoon at Wrigley Field. The expectation is that Joe Ryan would then start on Monday against the Guardians in Cleveland. Ober is coming off of a decent first half where he registered a 4.40 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and a 51/19 K/BB ratio over 71 2/3 innings in his first 13 starts.
Mets' ace Scott is finding his groove again
James Schiano discusses Mets' pitcher Christian Scott's strong stretch over his last six starts and why the Mets right-hander could emerge as a top-50 starting pitcher for the rest of the season.

Bradley surrendered a solo homer in the first, two runs on a single, a walk and a double in the second and two more runs on two walks, a single and a double in the third. If not for the free baserunners, it would have been a fine outing. As is, he took his first loss since June 9. Bradley fanned six. He’s 12th in the majors with 124 strikeouts but also tied for 14th with 43 walks. He’ll take a 3.85 ERA into his next start in Cleveland.

Two walks allowed by Ober in the first inning proved costly after Michael Busch singled to drive home Pete Crow-Armstrong to put the Cubs up 1-0. Ober allowed a leadoff double to Seiya Suzuki in the sixth inning but would get Michael Busch to ground out before being pulled in favor of Tommy Nance. Nance would throw a wild pitch to allow Suzuki to score, with that run being credited to Ober. It was a solid night for Ober overall, who settled in nicely after allowing three baserunners to reach base in the first inning. He has allowed two earned runs or fewer in back-to-back games and will take the mound next on Wednesday against the Guardians.

Ryan left with a one-run lead, which was blown in the seventh by Tommy Nance in his Twins debut. So, he finishes the first half 6-5 with a 2.85 ERA. Ryan has produced 11 quality starts, which doesn’t count a couple of outings in which he pitched five-plus scoreless innings.

Matthews was on roll early in this game. His slider had plenty of bite, he was missing bats, and he got through the first three innings without a blemish. Then, things unraveled in the following two frames with the low point being a balk that forced home a run. Still, he settled down just enough to get through the sixth inning despite walking a batter and giving up two singles, bailed out by a double play and heads up play by Kody Clemens to tag Wade Meckler trying to take an uncovered second base. Regardless, Matthews closed out an uneven first half with a 4.57 ERA, 54 strikeouts, and 18 walks across 67 innings.

It was Ober’s first start since May 30th as he’s been on the IL with elbow inflammation. The 30-year-old struck out five and walked one on Thursday while throwing 65 percent of his pitches for strikes. His four-seam velocity was 88.2 mph, which is not great but actually not too far off from what we’ve seen from him this year. The calling card on Thursday was a sweeper that posted a 45 percent swinging strike rate. He struggled to miss bats with anything else, and his velocity still scares us, so we would not be adding him with the Cubs up next.

This had been reported earlier, and we thought that Mike Paredes would shift back into long relief, but now that Connor Preilipp (blister) is headed to the injured list, the Twins will have to keep a bullpen game going for a bit. Ober, who had been out since the end of May with a flexor strain, has a 4.59 ERA in 66 2/3 innings this season and should be avoided in fantasy leagues.

There are plenty of moving parts here. Simply put, Mike Paredes will shift to a long relief role in place of rookie Marco Raya, who is headed to the injured list with a shoulder impingement, with Ober returning to Minnesota’s rotation. The 30-year-old has been out with a mild flexor strain that put him on the shelf back in late May. His immediate fantasy appeal is limited to deeper mixed leagues as a matchup-dependent back-end rotation option.

Bradley was outstanding again, and this makes back-to-back starts where the 25-year-old has struck out double-digit hitters. The only run allowed was a solo homer by Rhys Hoskins, and sans that, he had zero issue disposing of the Cleveland lineup while picking up his eighth victory of the season and lowering his ERA to 3.67. After going through a bit of a dip in the middle of June, Bradley has really looked the part, and he’ll get a chance to keep it going against the lowly Angels on Sunday.

Matthews was lifted during a rocky fifth inning where he allowed a two-run homer to Max Schuemann before issuing back-to-back walks with two outs in the frame. He was charged with four runs over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out five and also issued four walks. The 26-year-old is questionable heading into his next start against the Angels on Friday. There should be some clarity on his status at some point later this weekend.

Ober kicked off a rehab assignment by allowing three runs over 3 1/3 innings for High-A Cedar Rapids last Sunday. The 30-year-old starter is working his way back from a mild flexor strain that put him on the shelf back in late May. He figures to be ready to rejoin Minnesota’s pitching mix at some point in early-to-mid July. His fantasy appeal is limited to deeper mixed leagues as a matchup-dependent back-end rotation arm.

Blake Snell struck out four of the six hitters he faced for Triple-A Oklahoma City in his first rehab start Saturday.

Snell, returning from surgery to remove debris from his elbow, also walked one and gave up a single in the 32-pitch outing. His fastball averaged 95.3 mph, which is right around his norm (95.1 mph last year, 95.9 mph in 2024). This was expected to be a short outing, so it’s probably no issue that he exited in the second. He’s expected to make three or four more rehab starts before rejoining the Dodgers.

Fourth overall pick Jackson Flora is getting an $8 million bonus to sign with the Giants.

That saves the Giants almost exactly $1 million based on his slot value. Flora, the first pitcher taken in the 2026 draft, had a 1.06 ERA for UC Santa Barbara this year. It’s unclear if the Giants will have him pitch some in the minors before the end of the year or if they’ll hold off until next season.

Michael Harris II went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a solo home run against the Rangers on Saturday.

Harris’ home run was his 17th of the season. He hit a solo shot off MacKenzie Gore in the third inning. Harris is 21-for-66 (.318) with three home runs and 14 RBI in 14 games in July. He’s hitting .299 with an .829 OPS and 57 RBI on the year.

Pederson’s home run was his 16th of the season. He hit a solo shot off Owen Murphy to leadoff the game. Pederson was just 4-for-23 (.174) in nine games in July entering play Saturday. He’s hitting .239 with an .812 OPS and 35 RBI.

Owen Murphy allowed three runs (two earned) in 2 2/3 innings and got a no-decision against the Rangers on Saturday.

Murphy gave up five hits, walked two and struck out two. He started what was essentially a bullpen game for the Braves. Murphy managed to pitch into the third inning, but gave up three runs in his third big league appearance. He’s one of the Braves’ top pitching prospects, but Murphy is unlikely to have much fantasy value in a bullpen role.

Jacob Latz tossed a perfect 1 1/3 innings and got the save against the Braves on Saturday.

Latz entered the game with a man on first and two outs in the eighth inning. He got Drake Baldwin to line out before tossing a perfect ninth inning that included a strikeout of Matt Olson. Latz has 19 saves and a 1.57 ERA this year.

MacKenzie Gore allowed five runs in 5 2/3 innings and got the win in the Rangers’ 7-6 victory over the Braves on Saturday.

Gore gave up six hits, walked one and struck out seven. He improved to 6-8 with the win. Gore allowed four runs in the second inning and another run in the third inning, but managed to settle in and pitch into the sixth inning. He pitched long enough to get the win. Gore has a 4.80 ERA, though his 3.93 xFIP points to better starts in the future. He’s lined up to face the Mariners at home next weekend.

Marte scored on a wild pitch in the third inning to put the Diamondbacks up 2-0. After his RBI single in the fifth inning, it was 5-0 Arizona in a game the Diamondbacks would go on to win 5-3. Marte is hitting .259 with a .773 OPS and 55 RBI.

The Orioles have pushed Kyle Bradish’s start from Sunday to Monday, with Brandon Young now slated to face the Astros.

This means Bradish will pitch in Boston instead of in Houston, which seems like a downgrade right now. It does give Bradish a night to celebrate his $90 million extension, however.

Dustin May allowed five runs in five innings and took the loss against the Diamondbacks on Saturday.

May gave up eight hits, walked four and struck out six. He fell to 5-7 with the loss. Saturday wasn’t May’s best start and it was the third time he’s allowed at least five runs in his last five starts. The 28-year-old right-hander has a 4.78 ERA and a 3.89 xFIP. May’s .328 BABIP allowed and 63 percent left on base percentage also point to him being unlucky this year. He’s lined up to face the Diamondbacks at home next week.
