The hard-throwing 24-year-old former closer is working his way back from last year’s Tommy John surgery and should make it to Arizona at some point in mid-to-late August based on his present trajectory.

He pitched four hitless innings with six strikeouts and one walk in four rehab appearances. He’s yet to pitch on back-to-back days, and the D-backs will want to be careful with him. Still, he could quickly become a candidate for save chances.

Martinez touched triple digits six times and topped out at a sizzling 102.4 mph during the 11-pitch outing. It was his first game action since undergoing Tommy John surgery last summer. The flame-throwing 25-year-old looks like Arizona’s closer of the not-so-distant future. He’ll require a couple additional outings before he’s ready to return to the majors, but he’s definitely close.

Martinez had Tommy John surgery last June and is now in the final steps of his recovery. Given how long he’s been out, the Diamondbacks will likely want to keep him in Triple-A for a couple weeks and have him build up to back-to-backs, but he should return to the Diamondbacks bullpen by the end of the month.

I don’t know the exact day when he’s going to face his lives, but he’s very close, very close.” Martinez had Tommy John surgery last June and had been targeting an August return. As of now, he seems on track to return at some point in August but might need time to work back into leverage innings.

We already knew that the 23-year-old right-hander was dealing with a UCL sprain and likely heading under the knife, but now it has been confirmed. He’ll miss the remainder of the 2025 season and most of the 2026 campaign as well while recovering from the procedure.

Martinez was diagnosed with his sprain Tuesday, and while the 23-year-old is awaiting a second opinion, the Diamondbacks still have ruled out the right-hander for the rest of this season and a large portion of 2026, as well. The question will be whether or not Martinez will undergo surgery and what type of operation it would be, but he won’t be a high-leverage option for Arizona for a while, at best.

Robert Murray of FanSided reports that the Phillies are signing Nestor Cortes (arm) to a one-year deal.

Cortes will get an MLB deal, which makes sense considering the deal will be prorated and there’s not much season left. The southpaw has not pitched since 2025 after undergoing surgery in the middle of October that year. While he has a starting background, there isn’t much time for to build into that role. A muti-inning option out of the bullpen for the remainder of 2026.

Polanco was placed on the injured list before Wednesday’s game against the Padres with ankle bursitis. The 33-year-old has had a disastrous first season with the Mets that has seen him deal with injuries and ineffectiveness when available. If he does undergo the operation, it will all but assuredly mean he’s played his last game in 2026. That may be true, either way.
