Mark Leiter Jr. lands on IL with hip impingement

White had a perfect day at the plate on Tuesday, collecting four base hits and crossing home twice for a pair of runs. It was already the second four-hit game for the 23-year-old infielder. He’s hitting .359/.390/.410 with six runs scored while striking out just three times in 41 plate appearances.

Wong entered the game on defense in the bottom of the eighth inning after Masataka Yoshida had pinch-hit for starting catcher Carlos Narváez. He then made things interesting in the top of the ninth, taking Hogan Harris deep for a two-run homer to bring the Red Sox within a run for his second homer of the season. The 30-year-old backstop has taken a larger share of the workload behind the plate and has been hitting the ball well, slashing .271/.359/.383 with 17 RBI across 157 plate appearances.

Harris entered the game with two outs and two runners on in the top of the eighth inning. He allowed an inherited runner to score on a single before ending the frame on a strikeout. The A’s would give him a needed insurance run before returning for the ninth. Harris gave up a two-run homer to Connor Wong before closing it out for his ninth save.

Jump dominated the Red Sox in Sacramento on Tuesday, holding Boston scoreless over six innings. He scattered three hits and stranded four walks, striking out seven on 90 pitches. The 23-year-old left-hander will look to build on the strong outing when he takes a 4.00 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and a 68/25 K/BB ratio across 63 innings into a start against the Tigers in Sacramento on Sunday.

Bennett pitched a clean first inning, then gave up a run on two hits in the second. He settled in to hold the A’s from scoring again into the seventh before Brian Serven took him deep for a two-run homer. That would do it for Bennett, ending his day with one out in the seventh at 88 pitches. He struck out four. The 25-year-old left-hander will take a 2.74 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and a 46/11 K/BB ratio across 65 2/3 innings into a start against the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Sunday.

The Diamondbacks blew a 6-0 lead between the eighth and ninth, but they pulled the game out in the end. Both teams scored one run in the 10th and zero runs in the 11th before McCann singled in the automatic runner in the 12th. Gerardo Carrillo then pitched his second scoreless frame to maintain the 8-7 lead and pick up his first win as a major leaguer. McCann’s four-hit game was the fourth of his career; he had one each in 2016, 2019 and 2021. He’s been on an incredible roll since coming off the injured list earlier this month, going 12-for-22 with three homers and 10 RBI. Still, he’s played in just six of 19 games during that span. Maybe the team will begin giving him the occasional DH start against lefties until he cools off.

Pfaadt departed with a six-run lead, only to watch Ryan Thompson give up three runs in the eighth and Paul Sewald surrender two homers to tie the game in the ninth. Before that, Pfaadt allowed six hits, walked one and struck out four. He had won five straight starts since rejoining Arizona’s rotation on June 30, but the best performance of the bunch wasn’t enough to make it six straight. He’ll likely make his next start Monday against the Padres.

Sewald retired just one batter before being replaced in a tie game. He’s still an impressive 24-for-27 in converting save chances, but his ERA is up to 5.26 with his 11 homers surrendered in 37 2/3 innings. Things don’t figure to get much better there, but the D-backs might as well allow him to keep closing for now. It’s not as if he’s likely to be useful in any other role.

Once again tonight, Chandler was quite good at limiting hard contact, but this still makes three times in four starts that he’s failed to complete five innings. He allowed eight hits despite giving up just five hard-hit balls. Chandler has definitely made real gains since the early part of the season, but it’s still not resulting in much fantasy value at all. He hasn’t won since June 25, and he’s just 3-8 on the season. He’ll likely face the Reds on Sunday.

The homer was a two-run shot off Paul Sewald in the ninth, and Bryan Reynolds then followed with a solo blast to tie the game. The Pirates, though, couldn’t finish off their impressive comeback, losing the game in 12. Lowe is 8-for-14 with four extra-base hits the last three days, so it seems his slump is over. He hit .218/.269/.378 with 54 strikeouts in his previous 39 games.
