Tyler Phillips pulled in fifth against Astros

Phillips gave up one hit, walked two and struck out four. He improved to 4-6 with the win. Phillips had a 3.86 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 21 innings over five appearances in August. His scoreless outing was his first scoreless appearance since July 8 against the Mariners, when he also tossed five scoreless innings. Phillips has a 3.43 ERA. He’s lined up to face the Cubs at home on Sunday.

Phillips gave up three hits with a solo homer by Mickey Gasper accounting for all of the damage against him. He finished with seven strikeouts and also walked three batters. He’s in line to face the Nationals in his next start on Monday.

He was scoreless through four, but allowed a triple and homer in the top of the fifth, then left two inherited runners in the sixth that both came around to score courtesy of Cade Gibson giving up a walk, hit by pitch and two-run single in short succession. Phillips has a 3.94 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in his last seven starts and continues to be about a 50/50 bet to actually pitch deep enough into the game to qualify for a win. He’s slated to face the Phillies next week.

Phillips was incredibly fortunate to just give up the one run in this outing. The Angels were hitting laser beams all night long, they just kept finding gloves. That is, besides a solo home run from Mike Trout. Phillips has shown some intriguing stuff as a starting pitcher, but not enough to have earned our trust yet. He’ll take a 4.45 ERA, 40 strikeouts, and 20 walks through 58 2/3 innings as a starter into his next outing against the Pirates at home.

Both runs came on Tyrone Taylor’s homer in the second. Phillips went out to start the sixth, but he was pulled after Bo Bichette’s leadoff single. John King replaced him and got a popup and a double play to end the inning. The win was just Phillips’ third in 12 starts and 16 relief appearances, though he has a nice 3.53 ERA. He would have been a candidate to return to the pen soon if the Marlins were buying at the deadline, but since that seems off the table, he’ll probably remain a starter and face the Angels next weekend.

Phillips is lined up to face the Mets on the road on Saturday.

Phillips gave up four hits, lowering his ERA to 3.28. Miami’s rotation has dealt with several injuries this season, thrusting him into a starting role. He has now pitched at least five innings in five of his past seven starts. However, the low strikeout rate and shaky peripherals prevent him from being a fantasy option outside of NL-only formats.

Phillips walked two and struck out two batters in the contest. His offense stated him to a six-run lead in the top half of the first inning, and all Phillips had to do was keep the train on the tracks to earn a victory. Unfortunately, he couldn’t do so. He served up a two-run blast to Nick Kurtz in the second inning and a bases-clearing double to Jeff McNeil in the fourth before ultimately exiting. Phillips got eight whiffs on 71 pitches on the night, registering an uninspiring CSW of just 23 percent. He’ll try to finish the first half strong as he brings a 3.52 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and a 52/32 K/BB ratio (69 innings) into Thursday’s showdown against the Mariners.

Phillips gave up a two-run homer to Bryan Torres, and unfortunately, that was enough for him to pick up the loss with the Marlins providing just one run of support in the contest. He only picked up a single strikeout, but he was able to limit the hard contact and didn’t issue a walk. Phillips has bounced back nicely since he was clobbered for eight runs against the Phillies two starts ago, and he’s lowered his ERA to a healthy 3.02 in the process. He’ll be a risky streaming option against the A’s on Friday, with that start taking place in Sacramento.
