Blue Jays claimed OF Rudy Martin Jr. off waivers from the Orioles; optioned him to Triple-A Buffalo.

Martin Jr. is a big pick up for the Bisons; the 30-year-old has hit .385/.489/.590 for Triple-A Omaha and .261/.396/.406 for Double-A Northwest Arkansas this year. The Orioles had acquired from the Royals for cash on July 18, but never used him in a game before having to designate him for assignment.

Cardinals optioned INF César Prieto to Triple-A Memphis.

The Cardinals needed to free up a spot on their active roster for the expected promotion of Joshua Baez from Triple-A Memphis on Saturday and it looks like Prieto drew the short straw this time around. He’ll continue to serve as extra infield depth at the Triple-A level.

    Nationals released RHP Miles Mikolas.

The 37-year-old hurler was designated for assignment on Wednesday after posting a 5.82 ERA over 25 appearances (11 starts) on the season. He’s now free to latch on elsewhere if he can find another opportunity that will almost certainly have to be on a minor league deal.

Twins designated C Alex Jackson for assignment.

The Twins needed to get their roster back down to 26 players following Thursday’s Field of Dreams game and unfortunately for Jackson he was the odd man out this time. He could generate some interest on waivers given the lack of quality catching depth around the league.

Brewers re-signed RHP Lyon Richardson to a minor league contract.

Richardson elected free agency rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Nashville, but the two sides were ultimately able to come together on an accord that made sense for both sides. The 26-year-old right-hander will continue to serve as extra bullpen depth.

Cardinals’ manager Oli Marmol told reporters on Friday that top prospect Joshua Báez will be promoted from Triple-A Memphis before Saturday’s contest against the Cubs.

The 23-year-old slugger has put on an epic power display at the Triple-A level this season, slashing .256/.328/.573 with 34 homers, 90 RBI and 21 stolen bases in 461 plate appearances. He has also whiffed 136 times, which fantasy managers would gladly accept with that type of power and speed production. He should get an everyday role in the Cardinals’ outfield for the rest of the season which instantly makes him an intriguing mixed league addition. He’ll be in the starting lineup to make his MLB debut against the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Saturday.

The 28-year-old righty has been sidelined since early June due to a recurrence of a lat issue that has bothered him for most of the season. He’s finally making tangible strides in his recovery though and is hopeful that he’ll be able to help out the M’s at some point in September.
