Braxton Garrett remaining in Triple-A for now

This was a new age ‘short starter game’ with Gusto and his counterpart Germán Márquez combining to throw 5 2/3 innings and 94 pitches. The old heads somewhere screaming at a cloud. Regardless, Gusto flashed some solid stuff with a lively mid-90s fastball that he kept up in the zone, sinker he did a good job to bury low, and deep array of secondaries that he landed for strikes. There could be some mild intrigue here if he eventually builds up to a full starter’s workload. He’s lined up to face the Phillies at home next time out.

Gusto hasn’t gone more than three innings in an appearance since being activated off the IL, so he’s likely not in the wins mix for what profiles to be a bullpen game for the Marlins.

Garrett had been dominant in almost 80 innings at Triple-A this season, so this effort raises his ERA to 2.32 on the year. However, he was still not going to be recalled by the Marlins even though they lost Max Meyer (neck) to the injured list. It’s fair to wonder if Garrett’s best path to MLB innings this season is through a trade.

Gusto could potentially mix in behind Janson Junk today in Junk’s return from the injured list, as he hasn’t pitched since July 2.

The left-hander also struck out six and walked one on the day. Garrett has struggled in two starts with the Marlins, but he has a 1.54 ERA, 0.83 WHIP, and 75/26 K/BB ratio in 70 innings at Triple-A. He probably deserves another chance to start or provide bulk relief innings at the big league level. But with Janson Junk (shin) close to returning from his rehab assignment, it’s tough to see how the Marlins will fit Garrett in.

Gusto was lit up for three runs in just three innings against the Rockies on Thursday and hasn’t made it through the fifth inning in any of his six starts with the Marlins, culminating in a troublesome 5.55 ERA. He’ll attempt to work through his issues at the Triple-A level for the time being. William Kempner was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding move on Friday.

Gusto came out after plunking Kyle Karros to start the fourth. He still hasn’t completed five innings in any of his six starts, and his ERA is sitting at 5.55. The Marlins might activate Janson Junk to replace him in the rotation next week. Braxton Garrett also seems like an option after throwing eight scoreless innings Wednesday for Triple-A Jacksonville.

Gusto gave up three hits, walked one and struck out four. Gusto pitched well again, but still doesn’t have much fantasy value because he’s a converted reliever and hasn’t completed a five inning start all year. With Eury Perez coming back next week, Gusto isn’t schedule to get another start.

Gusto allowed three hits and two walks, throwing 68 pitches. This was his fourth consecutive start as Miami’s rotation depth has been hit hard, but he hasn’t yet completed five innings. The pitching staff is projected to get Eury Pérez back this week, at least. Gusto’s next start lines up in St. Louis, but he isn’t on the fantasy radar due to limited usage upside.

Gusto surrendered plenty of hard contact in this one as he was tagged for eight hits, including homers by Gabriel Rincones Jr. and J.T. Realmuto. He walked three batters and only recorded one strikeout. The 27-year-old has yet to complete five frames through three starts since joining Miami’s rotation back on June 5. He’s not a recommended fantasy option when he faces the Giants at home on Saturday.
