Daniel Susac hits first two career homers in rout

After going his first 44 career games without one, Susac has three homers in two days. If not for the sudden surge, he probably wouldn’t have been in line to start more than one of the next three games with the Padres throwing right-handers the rest of the weekend. However, this could earn him some extra time at Drew Cavanaugh’s expense.

Cavanaugh was set to start behind the dish and bat ninth for the Giants on Friday evening, but he was feeling a bit under the weather as game time approached so the club made a last minute switch. Daniel Susac will catch in his place against Grayson Rodriguez and the Angels. Cavanaugh is considered day-to-day.

Susac had been sidelined since June 26 due to a lower back strain. Prior to landing on the shelf, the 25-year-old was hitting .262/.310/.330 through his first 115 plate appearances with the Giants. Eric Haase was designated for assignment to make room on the active roster.

Susac will go on the IL for a second time after previously missing almost four weeks with elbow neuritis in April and May. The rookie has hit .262/.310/.330 in 115 plate appearances, with most of his success coming very early on. He’d hit just .200/.258/.238 in 26 games since returning from the elbow injury. Drew Cavanaugh and Eric Haase will fill in for him, with Cavanaugh getting the nod in his MLB debut tonight.

The Giants are calling the issue minor, and the 25-year-old backstop is considered day-to-day. For the season, Susac is slashing .262/.310/.330 with zero homers, 14 RBI and a 27/6 K/BB ratio over his first 115 plate appearances with the Giants.

Susac will return as expected after missing more than three weeks of action due to right elbow neuritis. The 25-year-old backstop has hit a blistering .478 (11-for-23) with zero homers and five RBI in his first 24 plate appearances with the Giants.

Susac has been on the shelf recovering from right elbow neuritis since April 21. The 24-year-old rookie backstop will take over as San Francisco’s starting catcher after Patrick Bailey was shipped to the Guardians in a stunning early-season trade last weekend.

The stunning early-season trade is now official. Bailey is universally regarded as one of the top defensive specialists in the entire game and should immediately strengthen Cleveland’s entire pitching staff. The 26-year-old backstop is a non-factor at the plate, but he’s a two-time Gold Glove Award winner and seems to fit the mold of what the Guardians front office is looking for in a defensive-oriented starting catcher. It’ll be Bo Naylor heading to Triple-A while veteran Austin Hedges sticks around as his caddy. Bailey’s departure means the Giants are going to roll with youngsters Daniel Susac and Jesus Rodríguez as their catching tandem moving forward.
