Cubs promoted LHP Antoine Kelly from Triple-A Iowa

Kelly was acquired from the Dodgers earlier this summer and has posted a 2.79 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and 22/7 K/BB ratio in 19 1/3 innings in the Chicago organization. If he gets into a game with the Cubs, it will be his MLB debut.

Kelly will remain with Chicago as organizational depth after passing through waivers unclaimed. The 26-year-old lost his spot after the Cubs claimed Julian Aguiar from the Reds over the weekend. He made one appearance in the big leagues earlier this season, tossing 1 1/3 scoreless frames.

The Cubs needed to clear a spot on their 40-man roster after claiming Julian Aguiar off of waivers, and unfortunately for Kelly, he was the odd man out this time around. The 26-year-old southpaw made just one appearance with the Cubs, throwing 1 1/3 scoreless innings with one strikeout in his MLB debut.

The Cubs needed a spot on the active roster, so Kelly will be sent down. He threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings in his MLB debut.
  • CHC Relief Pitcher #70
Kelly had a 5.14 ERA and a 22/19 K/BB in 21 innings out of the pen for Triple-A Oklahoma City this season. Unfortunately, that’s a pretty common walk rate for Kelly, which is why he’s yet to pitch in the majors despite being added to the Rangers’ 40-man roster after the 2023 season and getting claimed off waivers by the Rockies in July 2024. He figures to remain in Triple-A with the Cubs.
  • LAD Relief Pitcher #70
Kelly bolsters the Dodgers’ left-handed relief stable heading into spring training after spending last year at the Triple-A level with the Rockies, posting an underwhelming 5.63 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and 41/27 K/BB ratio over 38 1/3 innings in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. He’s a low-risk gamble for Los Angeles as organizational depth.
  • COL Relief Pitcher #70
Kelly was claimed off waivers from the Rangers last month and was assigned to Triple-A Albuquerque. He had since given up six earned runs in 2 1/3 innings, having also missed three weeks with an undisclosed injury. It’s been a completely lost year for a pitcher who looked like a pretty good relief prospect a year ago.
  • COL Relief Pitcher #70
Kelly represents an interesting lottery ticket for the Rockies as a former second-round pick from the 2019 MLB Draft. The 24-year-old southpaw has converted to a full-time relief role and showed some real promise last year in the upper minors with a 2.04 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 79/23 K/BB ratio across 57 13/ innings (49 appearances) between Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Round Rock. He’s been limited to just 19 relief outings this year in the minors due to injury.
  • TEX Relief Pitcher #70
Kelly was the prospect the Rangers got from the Brewers for Matt Bush two years ago, and he was added to the 40-man after last season. He was a terrific minor league reliever last year, posting a 2.04 ERA and a 79/23 K/BB in 57 1/3 innings between Double- and Triple-A, but he had a 9.35 ERA and a 24/22 K/BB in 17 1/3 innings this season.
  • TEX Catcher #55
There were reports that the Rangers considered opening the season with three catchers on the active roster but ultimately decided against it. While Huff isn’t known for his defensive prowess, he can still swing it, hitting .298/.399/.548 with 17 homers across 321 plate appearances at Triple-A Round Rock. He’ll provide depth at catcher in the upper levels of the Rangers’ minor league system.
  • TEX Starting Pitcher #90
The 23-year-old southpaw came to the Rangers in the 2022 deadline deal that sent Matt Bush to the Brewers. Kelly was a dominant force out of the bullpen at Double-A Frisco in 2023 — compiling a 1.95 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and a 69/22 K/BB ratio over 50 2/3 innings of work before finishing out his season with six appearances at Triple-A Round Rock. Expect him to open the season in a high-leverage role at Triple-A Round Rock before eventually making his big league debut with the Rangers.

Cody Bellinger went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer and four RBI, propelling the Yankees to a 9-2 blowout win over the Red Sox in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series on Wednesday.

New York bludgeoned Boston’s pitching staff for a whopping 18 runs on 26 hits over a pair of games without Aaron Judge (calf), completing a sweep at Yankee Stadium and punching their ticket to the AL Division Series, where they’ll face the division-rival Rays. Bellinger delivered an RBI single against reliever Erik Miller in the fourth inning before breaking this one wide open with a three-run blast off Red Sox setup specialist Garrett Whitlock in the sixth inning, giving the Yankees a comfortable 8-1 advantage at the time.

Willson Contreras went 2-for-2 with a solo homer and a pair of walks in a loss to the Yankees in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series on Wednesday.

Contreras was one of the few bright spots as Boston’s ongoing offensive struggles carried into a middle innings of a win-or-go-home battle at Yankee Stadium. He managed to get Boston within a single run by taking Yankees starter Max Fried deep on a full-count offering with two outs in the sixth inning. He wound up reaching base safely in all four of his plate appearances as the Red Sox were sent home following back-to-back blowout losses in New York.

Luis García Jr. went 3-for-5 with a solo homer in a win over the Red Sox in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series on Wednesday.

García connected on a sweeper at the bottom of the strike zone from Sonny Gray, sending a blast into the right-field seats in the fourth inning to give New York an early advantage. It looked for a while like his round-tripper was going to be one of the few runs for either side in the contest until the Yankees managed to blow the game wide open with a six-run explosion in the sixth inning.

Garrett Crochet failed to record an out and was charged with four runs in relief during Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series against the Yankees on Wednesday.

Crochet took the mound in the seventh inning for his first game action since April 25, with the Red Sox facing elimination and trailing by a single run at the time. It didn’t go well. Simply put, he looked like a pitcher who hadn’t faced hitters in five months, as all four batters he faced reached base safely and eventually came around to score. Spencer Jones reached on a wild pitch and wound up on third base after a throwing error before George Lombard Jr. brought him home with an RBI single. Crochet was lifted after allowing back-to-back hits to Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Trent Grisham. It’s difficult to put the blame entirely on him, and he deserves plenty of credit for persevering through his rehabilitation to even have a chance to pitch in this spot, but Crochet simply wasn’t sharp enough in a moment when Boston needed him to keep its playoff hopes alive.

Max Fried allowed one run over six innings in a win over the Red Sox in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series on Wednesday.

It wasn’t an overpowering performance, but Fried kept putting zeroes on the scoreboard, carrying a shutout into the sixth inning before coughing up a solo homer to Willson Contreras with two outs in the frame. The 32-year-old lefty finished with six strikeouts and only issued one walk. He got plenty of support from New York’s as they piled up nine runs on 14 hits in the one-sided affair. He figures to take the ball at some point in the early stages of the AL Division Series against the Rays next week.

Sonny Gray surrendered two runs over 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Yankees in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series on Wednesday.

Gray kept his former team off the scoreboard until the fourth inning when Luis García Jr. tagged him for a classic Yankee Stadium solo homer into the right-field seats. He was pulled with two outs in the fifth at just 70 pitches with Red Sox manager Chad Tracy turning to Erik Miller to face Cody Bellinger with a pair of runners on-base. The move wound up backfiring for the second consecutive game in the series as Miller immediately surrendered an RBI single to extend New York’s lead. The 36-year-old impending free agent heads to the open market after compiling a 2.72 ERA and 149/46 K/BB ratio across 169 innings during his lone season with the Red Sox.

Braves sent RHP Elieser Hernández outright to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Hernández figures to elect free agency after passing through waivers unclaimed. The 31-year-old journeyman was cut loose by Atlanta earlier this week after failing to make their playoff roster. He posted a solid 2.25 ERA across 12 innings over five appearances during the regular season. He should be able to latch on somewhere as organizational relief depth this offseason.

Braves sent RHP Ricky Vanasco outright to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Vanasco passed through waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this week. The 27-year-old didn’t end up making an appearance for Atlanta after being claimed off waivers from the Tigers in late August.

Chase Meidroth went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer, leading the White Sox to a 7-3 win over the Astros in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series on Wednesday.

Meidroth gave Chicago a commanding four-run advantage by taking Astros high-leverage specialist Bryan Abreu deep to left field in the sixth inning. It was the first postseason homer of his career. With the victory, the White Sox swept the best-of-three series to secure their first playoff series win since their 2005 World Series championship run, punching their ticket to face the division-rival Guardians in the AL Division Series this weekend. It’s been a remarkable single-season turnaround for a White Sox club that lost over 100 games in each of the previous three years.

Jose Altuve went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in a Game 2 AL Wild Card Series loss to the White Sox on Wednesday.

Altuve’s 28th career postseason home run puts him one behind Manny Ramirez for the all-time lead. He had a chance to put Houston ahead in the ensuing frame but wound up flying out to right field with the bases loaded. It’s fair to wonder how much longer Houston will be able to sustain things with its current nucleus, which is comprised largely of remnants from the dynastic run earlier in the decade, including Altuve, alongside newer faces who have yet to lead the club to sustained playoff success. In some ways, being swept by an upstart White Sox team feels like a fitting end for this group with Chicago beginning to chart its own course in a fashion reminiscent of Houston’s own unexpected rise roughly a decade ago.
