Tigers optioned RHP Brenan Hanifee to Triple-A Toledo.

Hanifee has posted a 3.98 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and an 8/6 K/BB ratio across 20 1/3 innings in 21 appearances with the Tigers this season. He’ll head out to make room for Enmanuel De Jesus in the club’s bullpen as the Tigers wanted an extra left-hander to battle the Athletics over the weekend. Hanifee should get another chance with the big league club before the summer is through.

With Jackson Jobe joining the Tigers’ rotation, someone needed to get the boot from the pitching staff and Hanifee wound up on the outside looking in here. The 28-year-old right-hander holds a 5.06 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and a 10/7 K/BB ratio over 21 1/3 innings in 23 appearances with the Tigers this season.

Hopefully Hanifee didn’t actually make the trip from West Sacramento to Toledo after being optioned out on Friday night, as he’ll rejoin the big league club to take the place of Tarik Skubal after the star southpaw was dealt to the Dodgers. He’ll stick around for at least a few days while the Tigers figure out how to handle the void in their starting rotation.

With Kenley Jansen returning from the injured list on Friday, someone needed to get the boot from the Tigers’ bullpen and Hanifee was the odd man out this time around. The 28-year-old hurler has done a decent job in his time with the Tigers this season, posting a 3.29 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and a 6/4 K/BB ratio over 13 2/3 innings.

Jansen was checked on by a trainer early on while protecting a four-run lead in the ninth inning, but managed to stay in the contest. He recorded two quick outs before issuing a four-pitch walk to Mike Trout, which led to his removal from the contest. Brenan Hanifee came on to record the final out following his departure. The 38-year-old veteran stopper will undergo further evaluation and possibly imaging to determine the severity of the issue. Kyle Finnegan would be the next man up should Jansen require a trip to the injured list.

Not great. Jansen was lifted from the ninth inning of a save situation after issuing a two-out walk to Mike Trout. There should be an update on his status shortly. Brenan Hanifee came on to record the final out following his departure.

With Burch Smith (shoulder) the latest Tigers’ hurler to hit the injured list, Hanifee will get another shot to work out of the club’s bullpen. The 27-year-old righty sports a terrific 1.93 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and a 5/1 K/BB ratio over 9 1/3 innings in seven appearances with the big league club this season.

Smith is getting some additional testing done on Friday. If he’s forced to head to the injured list, Brenan Hanifee would be recalled from Triple-A Toledo to take his spot in the Tigers’ bullpen. Stay tuned.

The decision to option Hanifee coincides with Ty Madden avoiding the injured list, for now, after exiting Friday’s start against the Blue Jays after being struck by a comebacker. It’s not a lock that Madden will make his next start, but it sounds like there’s optimism he’s going to be fine after being able to throw on Saturday without any issues.

The 27-year-old hurler will take the place of the injured Connor Seabold (ankle) in the Tigers’ bullpen. Hanifee was off to an underwhelming start at Triple-A Toledo, posting a 4.91 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and a 12/5 K/BB ratio over 11 innings in his first 10 appearances.

Hanifee’s departure at the conclusion of spring training means Enmanuel De Jesus and Brant Hurter secure the final two spots in Detroit’s season-opening bullpen. The 27-year-old righty made a career-high 54 relief appearances for the Tigers last year, finishing with a solid 3.00 ERA and 40/14 K/BB ratio across 60 innings of work.

Tyler Stephenson is DHing for the first time this season Wednesday against the Cardinals.

The Reds called up Will Banfield as a third catcher on Tuesday, making it easier to use Stephenson as a DH when he’s not behind the plate. Stephenson gets the nod against Matthew Liberatore today even though he’s hitting just .175 against lefties this season. The right-handed hitter actually has pretty bizarre splits. He’s slugging .458 against righties and just .228 against lefties, but he has a 76/20 K/BB in 273 plate appearances versus righties yet an excellent 15/17 K/BB in 74 plate appearances against lefties. With Stephenson DHing, Eugenio Suárez is playing third base and Ke’Bryan Hayes is on the bench.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said prior to Wednesday’s game that he still hasn’t talked to Ketel Marte.

Still no real news here. Marte is supposed to be undergoing an MRI on his left knee in Arizona, but he remains on the restricted list for now.

Adley Rutschman is getting the day off Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.

Rutschman DH’d when he didn’t catch Sunday, but this one will be a full day off. The Red Sox have Connor Wong behind the plate and Mickey Gasper DHing.

Even though the Twins are facing a righty, Trevor Larnach has been dropped to sixth in the lineup for Wednesday’s game against the Braves.

Larnach was replaced by Luke Keaschall in the leadoff spot Tuesday, but he still hit second then because Byron Buxton was resting. With Buxton back today, Larnach is hitting in the bottom half of the order against a righty for the first time since June 9. Larnach is 5-for-32 with just one walk and one run scored in his last nine games, and he’s definitely a weaker option in mixed leagues while batting lower in the lineup.

Gavin Sheets is on the bench against a right-hander Wednesday versus the Mets.

Sheets homered Sunday and singled and scored Monday, but he didn’t play Tuesday against a lefty and now he’s sitting in favor of Sung-Mun Song versus Robert Stock. The Padres have Manny Machado DHing today, but they could have used Sheets in left and Luis Regnifo in third. Instead, if’s Rengifo in left and Song at third.

Robert Murray of FanSided reports that the Phillies are signing Nestor Cortes (arm) to a one-year deal.

Cortes will get an MLB deal, which makes sense considering the deal will be prorated and there’s not much season left. The southpaw has not pitched since 2025 after undergoing surgery in the middle of October that year. While he has a starting background, there isn’t much time for to build into that role. A muti-inning option out of the bullpen for the remainder of 2026.

Mets interim manager Andy Green told reporters that Jorge Polanco is likely to undergo surgery on his ankle.

Polanco was placed on the injured list before Wednesday’s game against the Padres with ankle bursitis. The 33-year-old has had a disastrous first season with the Mets that has seen him deal with injuries and ineffectiveness when available. If he does undergo the operation, it will all but assuredly mean he’s played his last game in 2026. That may be true, either way.

Cody Bellinger (hamstring) could return to the lineup for the Yankees by Sunday.

Bellinger will play Thursday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. If that game — and likely at least one more contest — goes well, the 31-year-old could be back for the series finale Sunday against the Blue Jays. Even Bellinger needs a day or two more in the minors, it’s a positive development for the Yankees and fantasy managers.

Luis Robert Jr. is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday’s tilt against the Padres.

Robert will get a break for the series finale against San Diego. Brett Baty will play in left field with Robert out, and A.J. Ewing will get the start in center.

Chris Cotillo of MassLive reports that the Phillies are currently discussing a potential deal with Nestor Cortes (biceps).

Cortes has been out for all of 2026 while recovering from surgery on his left arm. There’s no guarantee that the 31-year-old will be able to pitch in 2026, but he could be a potential multi-inning option for the final month — and potentially the postseason — for Philadelphia.
