Red Sox optioned RHP Greg Weissert to Triple-A Worcester.

This is all about getting a fresh arm after the Red Sox went 13 innings last night. Weissert threw 34 pitches in that game and figures to return when he’s fresh. He holds a 3.97 ERA in 41 1/3 innings this year for Boston.
Devers' season ends early with core muscle injury
Rafael Devers was placed on the 60-day injured list with a core muscle injury, ending the Giants slugger's season early in the middle of an offensive tear.

Blue Jays placed OF Rudy Martin Jr. on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain.

Martin waited more than a decade for his first shot in the majors before a hamstring injury put him on the shelf after just two games. The 30-year-old journeyman went 0-for-2 at the dish. His season is almost certainly over and he’ll have to wait a bit longer to try to collect his first career hit.

Blue Jays optioned LHP Ricky Tiedemann to Triple-A Buffalo.

Tiedemann heads back to the minors after allowing one run with an 8/6 K/BB ratio across six innings of work over five appearances for the Blue Jays. The 24-year-old former top prospect figures to return at some point before the regular season concludes.

Thomas Saggese is hitting leadoff against the Giants on Monday.

Saggese gets a chance atop St. Louis’ lineup after doing a spectacular job filling in for JJ Wetherholt (wrist) and Masyn Winn (thumb) of late. The 24-year-old former prospect has hit .392 (20-for-51) with three homers, nine RBI and three steals over his last 15 games. He’s the type of sneaky late-season addition that can make a difference on the margins in an extremely deep fantasy league.

Miguel Rojas (shoulder) is in the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Reds.

Rojas told reporters he didn’t require an injection in his shoulder after aggravating an existing labrum team while diving for a ball during Sunday’s game against the Marlins. It’s an encouraging sign that the 37-year-old infielder, who is expected to retire at the conclusion of the year, is already back in the lineup without missing any additional time. It doesn’t appear to be a significant concern moving forward.

Gleyber Torres is in the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Blue Jays.

Torres has ceded a considerable amount of playing time to youngster Hao-Yu Lee recently, starting just four of Detroit’s last 12 contests at second base. He’s back at the keystone and hitting second against Blue Jays righty José Soriano in this one.

Freddie Freeman is not in the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Reds.

As expected, Freeman takes a seat with the Dodgers managing a relatively minor right knee issue that he’s been playing through recently. The 37-year-old first baseman missed a pair of games last week due to the lingering issue, but was feeling much better over the weekend. It’ll be versatile Enrique Hernández taking over at the cold corner in his place on Monday night.

Matt McLain (shoulder) remains out of the lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Dodgers.

McLain takes a seat for the third consecutive game due to lingering left shoulder soreness. It seems unlikely that he’ll require a trip to the injured list with less than two weeks left in the season, but the Reds aren’t going to rush him back too quickly and risk a setback. It’ll be Juan Brito drawing another opportunity at the keystone in his absence.

Diamondbacks claimed OF Jesús Sánchez off waivers from the Blue Jays.

Sánchez heads out west to help Arizona as a platoon option for the remainder of their late-season playoff push. The 28-year-old corner outfielder was designated for assignment by Toronto last week after hitting just .260/.318/.416 with eight homers and one steal in 299 plate appearances. The lackluster offensive production was manageable for the Blue Jays, but it became unpalatable when paired with utterly abysmal defense. He’ll split time in the outfield corners, in addition to spending some time at DH, for the Diamondbacks over the final two weeks of the season.

Josue De Paula is starting as the DH and batting ninth on Monday against the Reds.

Nick Lodolo is on the mound for the Reds, so De Paula moves down to ninth in the order, but it’s nice to see that he will remain in the lineup, even against lefties. He hit .267 off lefties in Double-A, but had just eight extra-base hits all season, so we’ll watch closely to see how he handles Major League lefties.

Samuel Basallo is not in the starting lineup against the Mets on Monday.

Basallo has been struggling with the bat over the final month of the season as he attempts to play through a shoulder injury. With both Coby Mayo and Christian Encarnacion-Strand hitting well, there are no DH at-bats for Basallo, so he has simply been playing every other day as a catcher. That makes him hard to trust in fantasy leagues. Carlos Narvaez will catch and hit ninth on Monday.
