Bo Bichette reaches six times, drives in three

Hays takes Gage Workman’s spot on the major league roster and should start against lefties as a left fielder and DH, leaving Jase Bowen without much of a role. Hays hit .233/.250/.326 in 44 plate appearances for the White Sox during his rare healthy moments this season. He’s a lifetime .282/.340/.477 hitter versus southpaws.

Workman, who was picked up from the Tigers along with Casey Mize on Monday, appeared in two games for the Padres and had a three-run double in one of his three at-bats.

Muncy was 0-for-3 with two strikeouts on the day before driving the only pitch he saw from Aroldis Chapman off the Green Monster. It was a little bit surprising to see Muncy start today. Technically, it was the Athletics’ fourth straight game facing a lefty starter, but in this case, it was just an opener in Erik Miller. Muncy got the nod anyway and obviously played the entire game. With the Rays set to throw righties in all three games of their upcoming series, Muncy could head back to the bench in favor of Donovan Walton on Monday.

It’s a third straight quality start for Ginn. He has 11 of those in 21 starts this season, which is pretty good for someone who opened up as a mop-up man. He’ll likely make his next start Saturday at home against the Rangers.

Schwarber hadn’t homered since July 18, but his two long balls on Sunday tied him with Yordan Alvarez for the MLB lead at 35. He also regained sole possession of the National League lead. The veteran DH is striking out quite a bit more than usual this season, which is something to monitor as he approaches his mid-30s. However, he still has his power stroke and remains capable of getting hot at the plate down the stretch.

Despite throwing 36 pitches in a four-out save Saturday, Harris was sent back out for the ninth today. He allowed a single and a walk, but he got the save after Ceddanne Rafaela lined out to center to end the game. Harris will almost certainly be down Monday, which could lead to a save chance for Elvis Alvarado.

The Red Sox termed this a bullpen game, but Erik Miller essentially functioned as an opener before Bello came in to start the second. Bello struck out four and walked none before leaving in line for the win. That didn’t hold up, though. Bello probably won’t be available to pitch again until Thursday.

That was after Garrett Whitlock took a blown save for giving up the tying run in the eighth. Chapman got two quick outs to start the ninth but then gave up a single, a steal on what should have been a pickoff and a go-ahead double. The pickoff wasn’t converted into an out because Chapman was fairly slow getting the ball to Willson Contreras and then Contreras made a bad throw to second. Chapman warmed up to come into Saturday’s game and threw 23 pitches today, so he might be down Monday. Whitlock should be available to close.

Luzardo walked one as the Phillies won 7-6 in 12 innings. The lefty has been on a roll lately and lowered his ERA to 3.32 on Sunday. Since arriving in Philadelphia in 2025, he has posted one of the lower left-on-base rates among qualified starters, suggesting he’s been a bit unlucky. That was evident in the gap between his ERA and estimators last season and early in 2026. The most recent version of Luzardo is the best we’ve seen in the bigs, and he’s throwing his sweeper even more so far this year. It’s a pitch he debuted in 2025. Next time out, Luzardo draws the Twins in Minnesota.

Bieber struck out four and walked three as the Jays lost 7-6 in 12 innings. He’s had a few blowups since returning from injury, but Sunday’s damage came primarily on two Kyle Schwarber homers. Bieber has been leaning into his changeup more this season. Entering the day, it was his only pitch with a positive run value. A matchup against the Yankees next time out sounds intimidating, but they haven’t been the same lineup without Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Cody Bellinger.
