Nationals SS prospect Seaver King went 3-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored for Triple-A Rochester on Sunday.

King is hitting .284/.361/.469 in 41 games at Triple-A with seven home runs, 29 RBI, and four steals. With CJ Abrams continuing to struggle defensively at shortstop, it’s fair to wonder if the Nationals would consider a position change in the offseason to ensure a place for King in the 2027 lineup.

He also, notably, played third base. Perhaps that opens a September call-up pathway for King, who has homered in 6-of-10 contests for Rochester and is currently hitting .375/.467/.719 since returning from an oblique strain on July 30.

That’s four homers in eight games for King, and he’s 20-for-55 with a 14/8 K/BB in 14 games since returning from an oblique strain. That the Nationals are moving CJ Abrams to second base clears to the way for King to take over shortstop as soon as the Nationals think the 2024 first-round pick is ready. It might not happen until next year, but he’s making a case.

King was the Nationals’ first-round pick in 2024 and began the season with a blistering start in Double-A, hitting .336/.427/.562 with five homers and five steals in 35 games. He was then promoted to Triple-A, where he has hit .275/.338/.443 with five home runs and four steals in 33 games. King played some second base this year but is primarily playing shortstop, which will create some questions about how the team can make room for him if they want him in the lineup in 2027. For now, the team doesn’t believe his oblique injury is serious, and they hope it will only keep him out for a few weeks.

King was batting .336/.427/.562 with five homers and five steals for Harrisburg. Exclusively a shortstop previously, he’s played five of his 35 games at second base. If he starts seeing more time at the keystone, that could be a sign that the Nationals plan to give him a look over Nasim Nuñez at some point. Shortstop might also be a possibility if they decide to trade CJ Abrams before the deadline, though such a move seems less likely than it did a few months ago.

Gott, Lipscomb, and Mervis all have prior MLB experience but were unable to win an Opening Day job with the Nationals. As a 33-year-old veteran, Gott has no more minor league options remaining, so it remains to be seen where he goes from here. Seaver King is the Nationals’ 5th-ranked prospect and is coming off a strong Arizona Fall League season. He was 6-for-16 in MLB spring training with five singles and a stolen base, and he will now either head to Double-A or Triple-A to try and continue his strong run of production.

King, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, hit .359/.468/.563 line with three homers, a 15/11 BB/K ratio, and 11 steals over 18 games in the AFL. The 22-year-old had a down season in 2025, but looks to have figured things out towards the end of the season and in Arizona. He’ll likely start the year in Double-A with the chance to get promoted if he continues playing like this.

Valdez has been the talk of the desert this fall, slashing .370/.519/.870 with eight homers and 26 RBI across 18 games. The 21-year-old slugger’s emergence gives the Pirates another potential high-impact bat to pair with blue-chip prospects Konnor Griffin and Edward Florentino, who will enter next season among the top-ranked talents in baseball. Here’s the full lineup: Nick Morabito (CF), Seaver King (2B), Parks Harber (1B), Valdez (RF), Owen Ayers (C), Nacho Alvarez Jr. (3B), Chris Suero (DH), Starlyn Caba (SS) Josh Adamczewski (LF) and Karson Milbrandt (P).

King has been one of the main standouts on the fall circuit, batting .419 (13-for-31) with two homers and 15 RBI through seven games. The 22-year-old shortstop was the 10th overall selection in the 2024 MLB Draft posted a .631 OPS with six homers and 30 steals across 125 games between High-A Wilmington and Double-A Harrisburg this past season. He’ll open next year back in the upper minors where his combination of athleticism and bat speed put him on the fast track to the big leagues, especially if he adds some defensive versatility. He’s fast enough to make a fantasy impact on the basepaths as a stolen base source down the road.

Through five games, King leads the AFL in hits, doubles, and RBI while slashing .417/.462/.750 with one home run and 10 RBI to go along with a 3/1 K/BB ratio. The 10th overall pick in the 2024 draft is starting to come into his own a bit and could be in for a breakout season in Double-A in 2026.

King was the 10th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft as an advanced hitter out of Wake Forest. However, he had an inconsistent first full year in pro ball, hitting .244/.294/.337 in 125 games between High-A and Double-A with six home runs and 30 steals. The 22-year-old had a great showing on Wednesday and is learning a lot from his AFL teammate, Tigers’ infielder Kevin McGonigle, the second-ranked prospect in all of baseball. King had been focusing so much on finding the right swing path, but McGonigle told him, “‘It’s never the swing. It’s always pitches and timing and all those things.’ So he kind of simplified it for [King] today, and you know, it worked.” During the regular season, King posted a .440 OBP and .912 OPS with the count in his favor and a .196 OBP and .410 OPS when he was behind in the count, so an improved approach could lead to a breakout 2026 season.

Angels recalled LHP Sammy Peralta from Triple-A Salt Lake.

The 28-year-old left-hander was just optioned out to Triple-A Salt Lake on Saturday, but he’ll rejoin the Angels’ bullpen with Samy Natera Jr. (back) heading to the injured list. Peralta has posted a 7.94 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and a 9/3 K/BB ratio over 5 2/3 innings in four appearances between the Angels and Rockies on the season.

Angels placed LHP Samy Natera Jr. on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to August 17, with low back muscle spasms.

It’s unclear how long the Angels expect the 26-year-old southpaw to be sidelined for, but he’ll miss a couple of weeks at a minimum. Sammy Peralta was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move on Thursday to take Natera’s place in the Halos’ bullpen.

Jordan Walker had a three-run homer, an RBI groundout and walk Thursday in the Cardinals’ 10-9 win over the Reds.

The seesaw game saw the Cardinals go up 4-0 in the third, the Reds come back to take a 5-4 lead in the sixth, the Cardinals score six runs after an error in the top of the ninth and the Reds fall just short of another comeback while scoring four runs in the bottom of the ninth. There were a total of 14 walks and three HBPs on the day, and both teams had more runs scored than hits (10 to 8 for the Cards, 9 to 7 for the Reds). Walker’s homer, the Cardinals’ lone extra-base hit, was his 26th of the year. He went without one for 19 games after the Home Run Derby, but he’s rebounded with four in his last 13 games.

Michael McGreevy pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed three runs Thursday against the Reds.

McGreevy allowed just one hit and one walk through five. All of the runs came after he was replaced by Ryne Stanek with the bases loaded and one out in a 4-0 game in the sixth. Stanek went on to give up a single and a grand slam make it a 5-4 game. The Cardinals did ultimately prevail and improve to 4-0 in McGreevy’s starts this month. McGreevy, though, has collected just one of those wins. He’ll take a 5-9 record and a 3.54 ERA into his next start against the Orioles.

Riley O’Brien picked up his 33rd save despite retiring just one of the four Reds he faced in the ninth Thursday.

The Cardinals got O’Brien up when they took the lead in the ninth today but then sat him down after going ahead by five runs. They instead went to George Soriano, who has been very reliable this year. Soriano, though, walked three and gave up a hit while getting two outs. O’Brien entered a save situation with the score 10-6 and gave up a two-run single to Sal Stewart before walking two to make it 10-9. Matt McLain, already with a grand slam on the day, came up again with the bases loaded, but his hard liner to right was caught to end the game. O’Brien threw 15 pitches today while working for the third time in four days, so he might be down Friday. Soriano would normally be the fallback, but he’ll almost certainly be rested, too. It might be Gordon Graceffo’s time to shine.

Brady Singer yielded four runs in six innings Thursday in a no-decision against the Cardinals.

Singer just missed a fourth consecutive start of exactly six runs and three runs allowed. He left in line for the win today after the Reds busted out for five runs in the bottom of the sixth, but it didn’t quite hold up. Maybe he’ll do a little better while starting in San Francisco next week.

Asked to close out a 5-4 game, Brock Burke gave up six unearned runs to take a blown save and a loss Thursday against the Cardinals.

The Reds wanted to stay away from Emilio Pagán today, so Burke had the ninth. It would have worked out fine, but with two on and two outs, Dane Myers, seemingly feeling left fielder TJ Friedl close to him, had a flyball go off his glove for a two-base error. After that came an intentional walk, a single and two more walks before Burke finally departed. It goes as Burke’s first blown save after two saves and 15 holds in 64 appearances. His ERA, though, dropped to 2.73 since all of the runs were unearned.

Matt McLain hit his second career grand slam Thursday against the Cardinals.

McLain’s slam off Ryne Stanek gave the Reds a 5-4 lead in the sixth. He had a chance for another one with two outs in the ninth and the Reds down 10-9, but his 102-mph liner to right was easily handled by Jordan Walker. McLain did also walk and score a second run today. He’s back looking like a decent mixed-league option while hitting .259 with four homers and three steals in his last 17 games.

CJ Abrams is not in the Nationals’ starting lineup for Thursday evening’s contest against the Rangers.

If you’re going to take a day off on occasion, doing so against Rangers’ right-hander Jacob deGrom isn’t the worst idea in the world. Expect to see the superstar infielder make an appearance off the bench if the right situation arises later in the game. Nasim Nuñez will start in his place at shortstop and bat eighth for the Nationals on Thursday night in Arlington.

Ryan McMahon (thumb) was held out of the Yankees’ starting lineup for Thursday’s contest against the Orioles.

The 31-year-old slugger jammed his thumb while sliding into second base during Wednesday’s victory over the O’s. As of now, there don’t appear to be any plans to place him on the injured list, but it sounds like he may need a couple of days off. Jose Caballero will start in his place at the hot corner on Thursday and will bat ninth against Orioles’ right-hander Kyle Bradish.
