Joe Musgrove said he currently feels the “best [he’s] felt in two years.”

Musgrove hasn’t pitched in a game since Game 2 of the 2024 Wild Card Series against the Braves. He left that game injured and underwent Tommy John surgery a week later. During spring training this year, he experienced a setback with his elbow that delayed his recovery. It wasn’t until July that he started to face live hitters again, but he looked good in his last rehab start, throwing 1.6 mph harder than he did in 2024. He’ll likely need two more rehab starts, but he could be an option for the Padres and fantasy managers in September.

Musgrove’s timeline to return to San Diego’s rotation mix remains rather nebulous, but he figures to be ready to contribute at some point in the final month of the season. The 33-year-old is working his way back from Tommy John surgery and hasn’t pitched in a big-league contest since the 2024 postseason.

There was some thought that Musgrove would come off the IL this weekend, but that he gave up five runs in his last rehab start seemed to put the kibosh on that. It sounds like he’ll pitch again in the minors before getting a rotation spot.

Musgrove is expected to make his next rehab start Friday for Triple-A El Paso. The right-hander could return to the Padres’ rotation shortly after, but may need one more rehab outing before that can happen.

Joe Musgrove allowed one run and six hits in 3 1/3 innings in his rehab start for Triple-A El Paso on Sunday.

Musgrove, making his way back from Tommy John, averaged 94.6 mph with his fastball, which is really encouraging. He averaged 93.0 mph in his 19 starts in 2024, and his career high for a season was 93.5 mph in 2018. He threw 53 pitches today, so he’ll probably need at least one more rehab start. However, the uptick in his stuff makes him worth stashing in mixed leagues now.

Joe Musgrove will make his next minor league rehab start on Sunday at Triple-A El Paso.

The 33-year-old right-hander continues to progress in his recovery from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. He threw 39 pitches his last time out at Single-A Lake Elsinore on Tuesday, so anticipate him throwing around 50-60 pitches this time out. Barring any setbacks, he could be ready to join the Padres’ rotation at the end of August.

Musgrove threw 39 pitches in his first rehab outing as he continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery that he underwent back in 2024. There’s an outside shot he’s ready to make his season debut in late August or early September.

Both Nick Pivetta (elbow) and Joe Musgrove (elbow) will pitch for Single-A Lake Elsinore on Tuesday.

They will be opposed by Tyler Glasnow (back), who is on a rehab assignment with Single-A Ontario, so that’s quite a low-minors pitching duel. Both Musgrove and Pivetta are working back from long layoffs due to elbow injuries, but both have been building up to around two or three innings. We could see both of them in the Padres’ rotation by September if all goes according to plan.

Joe Musgrove felt strong after a bullpen session Saturday and thinks he’s ready to go on a rehab assignment.

Musgrove is now nearly 22 months removed from Tommy John surgery and hopefully has finally turned the corner.

“This is the best I’ve felt in a long time,” he said. Musgrove won’t be back until around Sept. 1 in a best-case scenario, so he probably doesn’t need to be stashed in mixed leagues just yet.

Padres’ manager Craig Stammen told reporters on Thursday that both Joe Musgrove (elbow) and Nick Pivetta (elbow) each threw two simulated innings on Wednesday.

The next steps for both veteran right-handers are still to be determined, but they’re inching closer to beginning minor league rehab assignments. Both should be expected to rejoin the Padres’ rotation at some point during the month of August.

San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kevin Acee reports there is “the potential” of rehab assignments for Nick Pivetta (elbow) and Joe Musgrove (elbow) in the first week of August.

“People who have seen Musgrove and Pivetta throw or gotten reports about those throwing sessions have expressed greater optimism about their progress over the past week or so,” Acee continues. Pivetta was scheduled to throw a live batting practice this week. Both would need to be setback-free to continue to a rehab assignment, obviously, but it sounds like the Padres could get rotation reinforcements in late August or September.

Carson Whisenhunt will undergo an MRI on Tuesday after leaving his start Monday against the Reds with elbow pain.

Whisenhunt said this felt different than the elbow sprain that cost him the final two months of 2023, and he’s hoping it might just be a pinched nerve. "[I’ve] never really felt anything like this,” he said after the game. “I don’t really know kind of where to be at with it. So just kind of play it by ear and get the MRI tomorrow and then go from there.” The Giants could recall Matt Wilkinson if Whisenhunt goes on the IL.

Nick Gonzales went 2-for-5 and singled in the automatic runner in the top of the 12th as the Pirates outlasted the Padres 3-2 on Monday.

Gonzales’s hit resulted in only run in the three extra innings. There were three bunts, though, none of which worked out. The first two, from the Padres, were both popped up and the initial one resulted in a double play. The last, from the Pirates after Gonzales’s go-ahead hit, saw the lead runner get retired. Gonzales also walked and stole a base in the contest. He’s fourth in the majors with his .308 average.

Ashcraft appeared to get through six scoreless, only to lose the shutout on a balk. He then left with a one-run lead that failed to hold up. It’s unclear how many more starts Ashcraft, who has now thrown 39 more innings than his previous career high, will make with the Pirates nearly out of contention at this point, but he’s still thriving, having allowed exactly one run in three straight starts. He’s in line to face the Cardinals on Sunday, but the Pirates have Thursday and Monday off if they want to give him some extra time.

If it didn’t hit him, he likely would have reached on a strikeout/wild pitch.
