Yankees placed LHP Max Fried on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to August 14, with a left elbow bone bruise.

Not great. It’s unclear how much time Fried is going to miss, but it’s a massive concern for the Yankees, and fantasy managers, with less than six weeks left in the season. He was scheduled to start against the Orioles on Wednesday. The 32-year-old southpaw limited the Mariners to one run over five innings last Thursday in his fifth start back from the injured list after missing time for the same issue earlier this season. It’ll be Carlos Rodón (elbow) taking his spot in New York’s rotation, which means that neither Will Warren or Ryan Weathers are heading to the bullpen now.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Max Fried (elbow) could wind up requiring only a minimum stint on the injured list.

It’s a remarkably different tone from Boone this time around after Fried missed nearly two months with a similar issue earlier this season. It sounds like it was more of a precautionary measure to put Fried on the injured list with a bone bruise in his throwing elbow earlier this week since he’s already resumed playing catch and is dealing with minimal elbow inflammation. It’s possible he’s ready to rejoin New York’s rotation at some point in late August or early September.

Carlos Rodón (elbow) will be activated from the injured list to start against the Orioles on Tuesday.

Rodón returns to New York’s rotation for the first time since hitting the injured list with elbow inflammation back on July 3. The 33-year-old veteran southpaw recorded seven punchouts over 4 1/3 shutout frames for Double-A Somerset in his final rehab tune-up last week. He shouldn’t have any significant workload restrictions in his return from the injured list and should be rostered in all fantasy formats. His return bumps Will Warren back an additional day and figures to push hard-throwing southpaw Ryan Weathers into a relief role.

NYY Starting Pitcher #40

Ryan Weathers continued a tremendous stretch of pitching on Sunday against the Blue Jays, throwing 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball while striking out four.

Weathers allowed six hits and one walk in a no-decision. He was in line for the victory before ninth-inning defensive struggles sent the game to extras. Regardless, the southpaw has been on quite the run. He entered Sunday’s outing with a 2-0 record and a 0.74 ERA over his previous four starts. Acquired from the Marlins this past offseason, Weathers has been a key piece of the Yankees’ strong rotation. He’ll get a rematch with the Blue Jays next time out.
Max Fried

NYY Starting Pitcher #54

Max Fried pitched well in a tough-luck loss against the Mariners on Thursday afternoon, allowing just one run on five hits across his five innings of work.

The 32-year-old southpaw struck out four batters on the day while issuing a pair of free passes. The lone tally against him came on a solo blast off the bat of Weston Wilson in the second inning which proved to be the only scoring for either side in the contest. Fried got seven whiffs on 88 pitches on the day, registering a CSW of 31 percent. He’ll bring a stellar 2.81 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and a 79/27 K/BB ratio (86 1/3 innings) into Wednesday’s tilt against the Orioles in Baltimore.
Will Warren

NYY Starting Pitcher #29

Will Warren allowed five runs in four innings and got a no-decision in the Yankees’ 10-5 victory over the Mariners on Wednesday.

Warren gave up six hits, walked four and struck out three. The trouble started right away for Warren as five batters into the game it was 3-0 and the Mariners already had two home runs. He allowed another home run in the third inning. Warren walked Randy Arozarena to being the fifth inning and was promptly removed, but Arozarena still came around to score with the run being charged to Warren. It was a bad start for Warren, who would’ve been on the hook for the loss if the Yankees didn’t come from behind to win after he was already out of the game. He’s lined up to face the Orioles on the road next week.
Ryan Weathers

NYY Starting Pitcher #40

Ryan Weathers held the Mariners to one run in 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision Tuesday.

Randy Arozarena’s homer in the sixth was the only damage, as none of Weathers’ three walks hurt him. Unfortunately, he needed one more out to secure a win, as the Yankees didn’t take the lead until the bottom of the seventh. Weathers remains 5-7 with a 3.69 ERA ahead of a start in Toronto on Sunday.
Max Fried

NYY Starting Pitcher #54

Max Fried pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings while striking out seven, earning a no-decision in the Yankees’ 3-2 win over the Braves.

Fried scattered three hits over 6 1/3 innings against his former team on Friday while striking out seven batters. While fantasy managers won’t be disappointed in the production, Fried received no run support while on the mound, exiting in the seventh inning with the game stuck in a scoreless tie. We’re still waiting on Fried’s fifth win of the season, as he hasn’t picked up a win since April 27th against the Rangers. Fried has allowed just four earned runs over his last 19 2/3 innings of work and is next scheduled to start on Wednesday at home against the Mariners.
Will Warren

NYY Starting Pitcher #29

Will Warren allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings and took the loss against the Cardinals on Wednesday.

Warren gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out five. He fell to 8-6 with the loss. Warren pitched well, but gave up three runs in the fifth inning and the Yankees failed to mount a comeback. His ERA is 4.18. Warren is lined up to face the Mariners at home next week.
Ryan Weathers

NYY Starting Pitcher #40

Ryan Weathers blanked the Cardinals over six innings to pick up a win for the Yankees on Tuesday.

This makes back-to-back starts where Weathers hasn’t allowed a run, and he’s given up just one over his last three over 18 2/3 innings. That’ll work. In this outing, Weathers struck out six while issuing just one walk, and he scattered four hits in a very impressive outing for the 26-year-old that lowers his ERA to 3.79. If there’s no change to the rotation order, Weathers will face Seattle in New York on Tuesday.

According to USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale, the Padres turned down the Yankees’ proposal for an Adrian Morejon trade that would have involved Will Warren.

There might have been others involved. Morejon is one of baseball’s best relievers, but he’s also a free agent at season’s end. Meanwhile, Warren is at least a league-average starting pitcher who is making the minimum both this year and next and won’t be a free agent until after 2030. That’s certainly not a bad offer, assuming that Nightengale has the correct info here.

Robert Murray of FanSided reports that the Phillies are signing Nestor Cortes (arm) to a one-year deal.

Cortes will get an MLB deal, which makes sense considering the deal will be prorated and there’s not much season left. The southpaw has not pitched since 2025 after undergoing surgery in the middle of October that year. While he has a starting background, there isn’t much time for to build into that role. A muti-inning option out of the bullpen for the remainder of 2026.

Polanco was placed on the injured list before Wednesday’s game against the Padres with ankle bursitis. The 33-year-old has had a disastrous first season with the Mets that has seen him deal with injuries and ineffectiveness when available. If he does undergo the operation, it will all but assuredly mean he’s played his last game in 2026. That may be true, either way.
