Mariners activate Carlos Vargas for season debut

The 31-year-old hurler has finally made it all the way back from Tommy John surgery and is ready for live game action. Barring any setbacks, he should make a couple of starts at the MLB level down the stretch, though with the inconsistency and workload limitations that should be expected upon his return he’s not necessarily going to be a strong option from a fantasy perspective.

Schmitt is set to undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee, so this move was an inevitability to free up a spot on the Giants’ 40-man roster. The expectation is that Schmitt will be fully recovered and ready to go in time for spring training.

Milner had been placed on outright waivers and now he has been removed from the club’s 40-man roster. The expectation is that the 35-year-old southpaw will pass through waivers unclaimed and elect free agency.

Crews singled on a soft grounder in the third inning, bringing two runners home after a throwing error to first base. He’d come around to score in the inning before coming through for the Nationals in extras. With two runners on and the game tied in the tenth, he knocked a base hit to walk it off. The 24-year-old outfielder is hitting .223/.292/.368 with 10 homers, 44 runs scored, 34 RBI, and eight steals across 349 plate appearances.

Hernández took Brad Lord deep for a two-run homer in the seventh inning to tie the game, staying hot for his fourth home run in seven games. The 26-year-old outfielder is up to 22 homers and 58 RBI while collecting nine steals and hitting .235/.313/.472 across 386 plate appearances.

Alcantara stranded two runners in each of the first two innings before the Nationals broke through against him in the third, bringing four runs home on a walk and four hits. He’d settle down to give the Marlins three more scoreless frames before ending his day after six innings at 94 pitches. He struck out three. The 30-year-old right-hander will take a 3.46 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and a 140/50 K/BB ratio across 189 2/3 innings into a start against the Royals in Kansas City on Thursday.

Rojas entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning and drove in a run with a base hit. He then went yard for a two-run blast off Logan Allen in the eighth. Despite starting the day on the bench with a left-handed starter on the mound for Cleveland, both of Rojas’ hits came off of southpaws. The 32-year-old infielder doesn’t bring much upside, but should continue to play in a strong-side platoon at third base.

Martínez put the Guardians on the board with a two-run blast off Daniel Lynch in the second inning. He later drove in a third run with a base hit in the ninth as he was responsible for plating all three runs for the Guardians on Saturday. The 24-year-old outfielder is hitting .245/.281/.431 with 13 homers, 37 runs scored, 48 RBI, and 11 steals across 341 plate appearances.

Lynch tossed a scoreless first inning, then gave up a two-run homer to Angel Martínez in the second. Lynch would go on to pitch into the fourth, departing with one out at 70 pitches while collecting three strikeouts. The 29-year-old left-hander will take a 3.06 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and a 46/19 K/BB ratio across 61 2/3 innings into a start against the Blue Jays in Kansas City on Friday.
