Logan Webb will start on Wednesday

There’s no reason for San Francisco to have Roupp, who is healthy, take the ball again after throwing a career-high 155 innings this season. The 28-year-old was slated to start Saturday’s contest against the Dodgers. He’ll finish with a pedestrian 4.01 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 143/75 K/BB ratio in 29 starts.

That will unfortunately end the 29-year-old right-hander’s season prematurely. Webb finishes the 2026 campaign with a 4.31 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and a 134/41 K/BB ratio over 160 2/3 innings in his 27 starts. He obviously has plenty of time to overcome the blister issue before the start of the 2027 season.

Roupp gave up five hits, walked three and struck out four. He fell to 9-14 with the loss. Roupp wasn’t as sharp as his three previous starts where he had a combined 1.13 ERA. He has a 4.01 ERA on the season. Roupp is lined up to face the Dodgers on the road on Sunday.

First, they’ll have a conversation. Webb gave up six runs to the Padres in Sunday night’s loss to fall to 8-9 with a 4.31 ERA. He’s currently slated to face the Dodgers on Saturday.

Webb struck out seven, but he gave up eight hits. Six of those came in the first two innings, when the Padres racked up five runs. Manny Machado hit a two-run homer in the second off one of the worst pitches Webb has ever thrown, an 84-mph sweeper that was simply put on a tee. Webb dropped to 8-9 with a 4.31 ERA. His highest ERA in any of the previous five seasons was 3.47 in 2024. Webb will face the Dodgers next weekend. He has a 6.17 ERA against them in four starts since the beginning of last year.

Roupp was excellent against the Cardinals at Oracle Park on Tuesday, holding them scoreless over six frames. He was able to strand four walks by giving up only two hits. He also collected two strikeouts. The 27-year-old right-hander ends the day with a respectable 4.00 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and a 139/72 K/BB ratio across 150 2/3 innings. He’ll take on the Cardinals again in a rematch in St. Louis next Tuesday.

Webb matched his season high with eight strikeouts, racking up 19 whiffs on 45 swings. He departed with a 3-1 lead, but it didn’t hold up, leaving him with a no-decision. He can’t really complain, though, given that he avoided a loss after allowing nine runs in two-plus innings last time out against the Pirates. Webb should make his next start Sunday against the Padres.

Roupp allowed just two hits and two walks in the game. Unfortunately for him, they all came in the fourth, with the second walk forcing in a run. Still, he cruised otherwise — he allowed only one hard-hit ball on the night — and the Pirates had to be feeling good to see him get lifted after just 75 pitches. The quick hook suggests the Giants are going to be watching his workload the rest of the way. Because of injuries, he had never thrown more than last year’s 109 2/3 innings coming into this season. He’s at 144 2/3 right now. Roupp is due to face the Cardinals next time out. It should be a two-start week, with a second home outing versus the Padres to follow, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Giants decide to give him some additional time between starts.

I’s the second shortest start of Webb’s career. He’s gotten nine outs or fewer six times in 202 career starts. Three of those have come since the beginning of July; he allowed seven runs in three innings at Coors Field on July 3 and five runs in 2 2/3 innings against the Red Sox just two starts ago. The rest of the outings in that span have been pretty good. Even with the five-run game, he had a 2.83 ERA in August (nine runs in 28 2/3 innings). All nine hits he allowed tonight were singles, and five came on non-hard-hit balls. It’s a little disturbing that he couldn’t stop the bleeding while retiring zero of the seven batters he faced in the third, but it’s probably not a major cause for concern. And, miraculously, he avoided a loss tonight. He’s the second starter this year to give up nine runs and not lose, joining the Royals’ Seth Lugo. The last Giants starter to give up nine runs in a non-loss was Kevin Correia on Apr. 20, 2004.

Webb will still get two starts this week, but now the first will be against the Pirates, rather than the Braves. That’s probably a good thing, though it hurts a bit that he’ll be matched up against Paul Skenes. Landen Roupp and Blade Tidwell will follow Webb in the series versus the Pirates.
