Landen Roupp tosses six shutout innings in victory

Roupp allowed just two hits and two walks in the game. Unfortunately for him, they all came in the fourth, with the second walk forcing in a run. Still, he cruised otherwise — he allowed only one hard-hit ball on the night — and the Pirates had to be feeling good to see him get lifted after just 75 pitches. The quick hook suggests the Giants are going to be watching his workload the rest of the way. Because of injuries, he had never thrown more than last year’s 109 2/3 innings coming into this season. He’s at 144 2/3 right now. Roupp is due to face the Cardinals next time out. It should be a two-start week, with a second home outing versus the Padres to follow, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Giants decide to give him some additional time between starts.

Roupp was too inefficient to pull off a quality start, but he did get his first win since July 17. This does make six straight outings in which he’s failed to complete six innings. He’ll take an 8-13 record and a 4.25 ERA into his next start against the Pirates.

With the Giants hoping for their first sweep of the season, they will turn to their ace on Wednesday. That means he will be flipped with Landen Roupp, who will now start on Thursday against the Diamondbacks. Webb last pitched on Friday against the Red Sox, so he will be on just four days’ rest, but he also only threw 2 2/3 innings in that outing.

The right-hander also issued four walks in the contest while striking out a pair of opposing hitters. The Guardians got to him early in this one, stringing together a walk, three singles and a sacrifice fly to push three runs across in the opening inning. He settled in nicely afterwards, but the damage had already been done. Roupp got seven whiffs on 90 pitches on the day, posting a CSW of 24 percent. Now 7-13 on the season, he’ll carry a 4.34 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and a 130/64 K/BB ratio (134 2/3 innings) into Tuesday’s matchup against the Reds.

According to Statcast, Roupp would have given up three homers in 29 ballparks tonight. However, at Oracle Park, those three batted balls, all in the 410-foot range, produced one homer, one triple and one double. Roupp has lost four straight starts, yielding 14 earned runs in 19 1/3 innings in the process, and the Giants are an incredible 2-16 in his last 18 turns. He’s slated to pitch in Cleveland next time out.

Roupp gave up two hits, walked five and struck out three. He fell to 7-11 with the loss. With the game scoreless after five innings, the drama started in the sixth inning. Roupp’s control abandoned him as he walked three of the first four hitters to start the inning. He was removed, but was clearly unhappy about it as he unleashed some words at manager Tony Vitello on the mound. The camera found Roupp tilting in the dugout as reliever Keaton Winn walked in a run with the bases-loaded. Winn was able to get out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts, though. Roupp has a 4.22 ERA. He’s lined up to face the Rockies at home next weekend.

Roupp stranded two runners in the first, tossed a clean second, then gave up one run on a walk and a hit in the third inning. Things got away from him with two outs in the fourth as he walked a batter, hit another, then gave up a run on a base hit. He’d walk one more before he was relieved on the mound, failing to get out of the fourth inning. The 27-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 4.12 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and a 114/48 K/BB ratio across 113 2/3 innings. He’ll take on the Padres in San Diego on Sunday.

Roupp got through six scoreless, but the Giants opted to stick with him with a 3-0 lead entering the bottom of the seventh. He gave up a double and a homer to start the inning, and after he was lifted, the Royals went on to score three more runs to take control of the game. It went as Roupp’s fifth no-decision of the year. In all five of those, he allowed one or two runs and recorded 17 or 18 outs, amounting to a 2.73 ERA. He’ll face the Brewers next.

Jason Foley and Caleb Kilian finished up with hitless frames. Roupp recorded just two strikeouts and five whiffs on 44 swings, but aside from Luke Raley’s 400-foot flyout in the second, he gave up little loud contact. After going 0-7 between May and June, Roupp has opened July with consecutive wins, allowing just one run over 15 innings in the process. He has a favorable matchup in Kansas City next week.

Webb was a member of the NL All-Star team, but he did not pitch in the game on Tuesday. That will enable him to pitch over the weekend once regular-season games begin again. Tyler Mahle and Trevor McDonald will then follow on Monday and Tuesday against the Royals.
